Dr Hannah Fry Joins The Celebrity Traitors

Dr Hannah Fry, known as a “brainbox,” has reportedly joined the upcoming series of the popular BBC show The Celebrity Traitors. This spin-off version follows the same format as the civilian series, where a group of famous faces try to determine who is a Faithful and who is a Traitor to win up to £100,000 for their chosen charity.

Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, the programme premiered on BBC One on October 8, 2025, and concluded a month later. In November last year, the BBC confirmed the show’s future, revealing that a second series would be in the pipeline.

Fans are eager to find out who will be taking part in the next season. According to reports, Dr Fry, a Professor of Public Understanding of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, is one of the celebrities set to appear.

A source told the publication:

“Dr Fry very much ticks the ‘academic’ box filled last year on the show by Dr David Olusoga, who of course made it to the final. She isn’t just a brainbox, however, she has a great personality and already has a loyal band of followers thanks to her BBC shows. It’s fair to say there are going to be some very clever people taking part this year.”

A BBC spokesperson told The Daily Mail:

“We are not commenting on speculation and details for The Celebrity Traitors series 2 will be announced in due course.”

Hannah could be joined by the likes of Amol Rajan, Richard E Grant, Hugh Bonneville, and David Mitchell, who have been rumoured to take part this year.

A Versatile Career

This won’t be the first show that Hannah, who studied at Queens’ College, Cambridge, has starred in. She has hosted several programs, including AI Confidential with Hannah Fry, The Secret Genius of Modern Life, The Infinite Explorer with Hannah Fry, Unvaccinated, Making Sense of Cancer with Hannah Fry, and Contagion! The BBC Four Pandemic.

She has also appeared on Have I Got News For You and Taskmasters New Year’s Treat. Additionally, she has voiced Professor Jeanie in the children’s show Hey Duggee.

A Star-Studded Lineup

The first series of The Celebrity Traitors was won by comedian Alan Carr. He was joined by singer Cat Burns, actress Celia Imrie, singer Charlotte Church, broadcaster Clare Balding, historian David Olusoga, former England rugby player Joe Marler, comedian Joe Wilkinson, TV presenter Jonathan Ross, and Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway.

Other participants included comedian Lucy Beaumont, actor Mark Bonnar, funnyman Nick Mohammed, content creator Niko Omilana, singer Paloma Faith, actress Ruth Codd, writer Sir Stephen Fry, soap star Tameka Empson, and former Olympic diving champion Tom Daley.

Fans will be happy to know that host Claudia Winkleman will once again return as the host for the new group of contestants.

New Episodes and Economic Impact

Brand new episodes of the spin-off series Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked will also return to BBC Two and BBC Sounds.

BBC’s head of entertainment, Kalpna Patel-Knight, said:

“In 2026 the doors of the castle will be opened again to welcome celebrity players to the game to see who can charm, who can scheme and ultimately who can survive in series two which promises to be just as unmissable as the first. Plus with Uncloaked returning and today’s news of the positive contribution The Traitors brand has made to Scotland’s economy, there is plenty to celebrate.”

The director of BBC Scotland added:

“The Traitors is an immense TV success story and it’s fantastic to have multiple versions of it filmed in Scotland. We welcome and celebrate it. This report highlights the many ways that Scotland is seeing a direct economic benefit from The Traitors filming here and, working together with our partners, we will use this success to promote sustainable growth within Scotland’s creative industry.”

Record-Breaking Success

The BBC revealed the huge financial impact of the series, which drew in millions of viewers. The debut episode brought in a mammoth 14.8 million viewers, making The Celebrity Traitors the biggest unscripted title for the BBC since 2021.

The finale also broke records, averaging 11 million viewers throughout its broadcast — the biggest overnight audience for the BBC, surpassing its own record-breaking Gavin & Stacey Christmas special finale last year. The finale also had 1.9 million viewers on BBC iPlayer, the highest live-viewing figure for any entertainment show broadcast on the streaming site.

The popularity of the series has significantly boosted profits for Scotland, where the UK series is filmed. An Economic Impact Report confirmed that the Traitors franchise, across the UK, US, and Celebrity editions, has generated an estimated £21.8 million to the Scottish economy.

A Must-Watch Show

The Traitors premiered in November 2022. As the synopsis reads:

“Get them before they get you. 22 people, one castle, £120k – Claudia Winkleman hosts the ultimate reality game of trust and treachery. Let the mind games begin.”

The Celebrity Traitors/The Traitors airs on BBC.
