Deine Mariner’s Medical Emergency and Recovery Journey
Winger Deine Mariner of the Broncos recently underwent “limb-saving surgery” after what initially seemed to be a minor injury turned into a medical emergency in the early hours of Sunday morning in Sydney. The club’s chief medical officer, Matt Hislop, provided a detailed account of the events that unfolded on Monday afternoon.
Mariner was forced to leave the field during the first half of Saturday night’s match against the Roosters. However, he was quickly assessed, strapped up, and returned to the game. Despite this, his condition rapidly deteriorated over the following hours, leading to an urgent hospital visit where doctors intervened.
Dr Hislop expressed his gratitude for the care received by both the Broncos and Mariner at Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA). He emphasized the importance of sharing the timeline of how quickly this rare injury can escalate.
The Timeline of Events
Mariner sustained a significant injury to his right quad late in the first half of the Roosters game. He was assessed, strapped, and padded before being allowed to continue playing. He maintained mobility and remained available, returning to the field with 15 minutes left in the second half.
By midnight, his quad had become swollen, but he was still clinically stable, with intact nerves and blood flow. He was able to finish dinner and go to bed without any immediate concerns.
However, at 1:30 am, Dr Hislop was called to examine Mariner, who was experiencing severe pain and a firm thigh. An ultrasound was performed to drain a haematoma, but the swelling was widespread within the muscle, making drainage impossible.

Critical Condition and Emergency Response
Despite the initial assessment, it became clear that Mariner was developing acute compartment syndrome. An ambulance was called, and paramedics provided essential pain relief before transporting him to the RPA ED department.
Upon arrival, doctors measured the pressure inside the muscle, which was significantly elevated. A decision was made to perform limb-saving surgery, and Mariner was taken to the operating theatre in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The recovery process will depend on how quickly the swelling in the muscle resolves. Both Mariner and Dr Hislop have expressed their appreciation for the exceptional care provided by paramedics, nurses, ED doctors, and trauma surgeons.
Impact on the Broncos
The Broncos are already dealing with several key players sidelined due to injuries, including Ben Hunt and Payne Haas. Additionally, strike centre Kotoni Staggs has accepted a two-match ban for a grade 2 dangerous contact charge from Saturday’s game.
This incident highlights the unpredictable nature of sports injuries and the critical role of timely medical intervention. The Broncos remain focused on supporting Mariner through his recovery while managing the challenges of their current injury list.
