Major Injuries Pose Challenges for Wests Tigers
Despite a 42-point loss to the Cronulla Sharks on Sunday afternoon in the Shire, the Wests Tigers may face more pressing concerns than just the result of the match. The club is currently grappling with a significant injury crisis, as two key players were forced to leave the game due to injuries. This development has raised questions about the team’s ability to maintain its performance in the coming weeks.
Adam Doueihi, who has been a standout performer this season and is being considered as a potential State of Origin candidate, suffered a shoulder injury while scoring a try in the first half. Meanwhile, second-rower Samuela Fainu also left the field early after picking up a foot injury. Both players are expected to undergo scans to determine the extent of their injuries.
Head coach Benji Marshall confirmed that both players will be assessed further, but the outlook for Doueihi is particularly concerning. He dislocated his shoulder during the match and had it reset, which could mean a recovery period of at least four weeks. Marshall expressed uncertainty about the exact timeline, but he noted that similar injuries have typically required around six weeks of recovery.
“His shoulder dislocated and they put it back in, so he’ll get a scan tomorrow,” Marshall said during his post-match press conference. “I’m unsure of the time, but we’ve had a couple of those, so it’s probably around four weeks, maybe six.”
Fainu, on the other hand, is dealing with a foot issue, and no clear return timeline has been established yet. Both players’ injuries add to the challenges the Tigers are facing, especially with the upcoming State of Origin series just three weeks away.
Doueihi’s potential absence from the field could be a major setback, as he was seen as a strong contender for a spot on the New South Wales bench. His versatility and form made him a valuable asset, and his injury raises questions about whether he will be available for Game 1 of the series, set to take place on Wednesday, May 27 in Sydney.
This is not the first time the Tigers have faced injury setbacks. Prior to the match against the Sharks, the team was already missing fullback Jahream Bula due to a shoulder problem and Apihai Koroisau, who was suspended. These absences will continue into next week when the joint-venture team travels to Melbourne to face the struggling Storm.
In light of these challenges, Jock Madden is expected to partner with another Blues candidate, Jarome Luai, in the halves for the upcoming game. This decision highlights the need for the Tigers to adapt quickly and find solutions to their current issues.
Samuela Fainu is likely to join three-quarters of the Tigers’ spine on the sidelines, but there is some positive news in the form of Kai Pearce-Paul, an English second-rower, who is set to return from a head knock. His presence could provide much-needed support to the team as they navigate through this difficult period.
The injury crisis has undoubtedly affected the Tigers’ performance, and it remains to be seen how the team will cope with these challenges moving forward. With key players sidelined and the State of Origin series looming, the pressure is on the coaching staff to make the right decisions and ensure the team can still compete at a high level.
