New Hybrid SUV from Mitsubishi Makes Debut in New Zealand

Mitsubishi has launched a new hybrid SUV in New Zealand, but the model is unlikely to be available in Australia in the near future. The vehicle, known as the Outlander Sport in New Zealand and the Xforce in other markets, is part of the small SUV segment and competes with models such as the Toyota Corolla Cross, Hyundai Kona, and Honda HR-V.

The Xforce was not initially considered for the Australian market due to design regulations, but its recent announcement in New Zealand has sparked renewed interest in whether it could eventually make its way to Australia.

Potential Benefits for Mitsubishi in Australia

If the Xforce were to arrive in Australia, it could offer several advantages for the brand. As a hybrid model, it would help mitigate potential fines under the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), which is expected to impose stricter efficiency requirements on vehicles in the future.

In addition, the hybrid Xforce could complement the petrol-only ASX model currently available in Australia. At the moment, Mitsubishi’s Australian lineup consists mostly of petrol and diesel-powered vehicles, with the plug-in hybrid Outlander mid-size SUV being the only exception. The brand also has plans for one fully electric model, a joint-venture compact SUV developed with Foxtron, an iPhone manufacturer.

Regulatory Challenges for the Xforce in Australia

Despite the potential benefits, the Xforce faces significant regulatory hurdles in Australia. It is unlikely to meet the country’s more stringent design rules, which previously led to the discontinuation of the ASX model.

A spokesperson for Mitsubishi Australia confirmed that the brand has expressed interest in bringing the Xforce to the Australian market. However, design regulations have prevented any official launch plans at this time.

Specifications of the New Zealand Model

The New Zealand version of the Outlander Sport is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor. In overseas examples, the system produces 85kW of power and 255Nm of torque.

Inside the cabin, the vehicle features a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and a digital driver display. Wireless phone charging and a panoramic glass roof are also included as standard equipment.

Expected Arrival in 2026

The Outlander Sport is set to arrive in showrooms in the third quarter of 2026. While it may not be available in Australia immediately, its debut in New Zealand highlights the growing demand for hybrid SUVs in the region.

For now, Australian consumers will have to wait and see if the Xforce will eventually make its way to their market. If it does, it could provide a strong alternative to popular models like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hyundai Kona.
