Toyota developing next-gen Commodore ute replacement

Toyota, one of the most iconic names in the automotive industry, might be gearing up to make a significant return to the ute market. According to recent reports from the United States, the Japanese automaker is considering launching a new ute model that could potentially challenge some of the most popular vehicles in its segment.

This new ute is said to be based on the highly successful RAV4 small SUV, which has consistently been a top seller for Toyota. The vehicle is expected to compete directly with models like the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz, both of which have gained considerable traction in the US market.

The idea of a RAV4-based ute has been under consideration for a while now, with several senior executives at Toyota hinting at its potential development. This has led to a series of discussions and speculations about what this new model could bring to the table.

Some of the key points surrounding this potential new ute include:

  • Toyota’s new ute in trouble: There have been concerns that the affordable RAV4-based ute may be delayed due to factors such as US tariffs, which could impact the fate of the 2026 Ford Maverick rival.
  • Toyota’s next must-have ute: There are suggestions that Toyota could build a ute version of the 2026 RAV4, positioning it beneath the Toyota HiLux and aiming to rival the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
  • Toyota’s surprise new ute takes shape: Recent news indicates that a ute based on either the 2026 Corolla or RAV4 is in the works, with the intention of competing against the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.

In 2023, Toyota unveiled a lifestyle concept ute that was reportedly hybrid-powered. While this concept generated interest, it seems that the production of the actual vehicle is still some way off. The brand is reportedly waiting for the right moment to enter the segment, taking into account various global factors such as trade deals and tariffs.

Timing has been a recurring theme in executive comments regarding the ute. Toyota’s North American Chief Executive Officer, Tetsuo Ogawa, recently provided more details about the project. He mentioned that the RAV4 would form the basis for the new ute, stating, “But for the compact truck? Definitely, we have such demand,” in an interview with Auto News.

He also added, “A RAV4-based pickup is an opportunity for us, and the dealers are waiting. Maybe they say we need today or tomorrow, but it takes time.”

This latest update confirms that the ute is still on Toyota’s radar and may even be in the development phase. However, it appears that the model is still several years away from becoming official. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the ute would be built on the RAV4’s monocoque chassis, which is different from other Toyota utes like the HiLux, which uses a ladder frame.

At this stage, it remains too early to speculate on the future of this ute in Australia. It is likely that the vehicle will be primarily produced in left-hand drive, given that North America is the target market for now.
