Richmond’s attempt to end a long-standing win drought at the MCG, which had lasted since July of last year, came to an abrupt end as they suffered a 37-point defeat against an underwhelming Adelaide side. The Tigers, who entered halftime with a narrow 10-point lead, were unable to maintain their momentum and ultimately fell short in their bid for a comeback.
On Mother’s Day, only 22,123 fans made the journey to watch the last-placed Tigers face yet another loss, marking their eighth defeat in nine matches. This result was particularly disappointing for Richmond, as they had shown signs of potential in their previous game, where they managed to break a losing streak against West Coast.
The Crows’ key players, including Jordan Dawson, Izak Rankine, and Wayne Milera, played a crucial role in turning the game around. These stars combined for 35 disposals in the third quarter, allowing Adelaide to dominate the match and secure a decisive victory. The Tigers, who had been fighting hard throughout the game, lacked the depth and experience needed to counter the Crows’ resurgence.

Adem Yze’s injury-ravaged Tigers showed spirit but struggled to find another level once Adelaide started to gain control. Despite their efforts, the team was unable to match the intensity of their opponents. Richmond, who have been on a rebuilding path, are still far from the premiership-winning teams led by Damien Hardwick, which achieved a record 22 consecutive wins at the MCG between 2017 and 2018.
The Tigers are currently dealing with a significant number of injuries, with their injury list reaching 17 after Sam Grlj was a late withdrawal on Sunday. Defender Tom Brown also suffered a broken forearm in the first quarter, adding to the challenges faced by the team.
Yze acknowledged the progress made in the first half, stating that the team was playing against a quality opponent and had won key metrics. However, he emphasized the need for players to improve on the field and be available for games. He highlighted the importance of getting players like Sammy Lalor back on the field to build consistency and develop their skills.
The Crows, too, are struggling to recapture their former glory, having failed to maintain the same level of performance seen in their minor premiership-winning season last year. Their lack of intent was evident in the first two quarters, where Richmond’s midfielders Tim Taranto and Jack Ross dominated the contest. Their efforts were supported by other players such as Kane McAuliffe, Patrick Retschko, and Seth Campbell, whose impressive finish in the first quarter stood out as one of the few highlights of the game.
Several key players were unavailable for Richmond, including captain Toby Nankervis, Dion Prestia, and several young talents. Only a handful of first-choice options, such as Taranto, Jayden Short, Noah Balta, Ross, Tom Lynch, Nick Vlastuin, Nathan Broad, Campbell, and Ben Miller, were able to take the field.
Despite their struggles, Richmond may have done themselves a disservice by securing five victories last year, a season many had predicted would be winless. Critics have questioned the team’s progress in their third season under Yze, but the coach believes that the rebuild process cannot be judged in the short term. He pointed to the example of Brisbane and the Crows, who both took time to recover from difficult periods.
Yze emphasized the importance of getting players to a certain number of games before they can truly make an impact. He noted that it takes time for young players to develop and that consistent game time is essential for growth. He also expressed confidence in the rebuild process, believing that it will eventually lead to success.
Reflecting on their own rebuilding journey, Crows coach Matthew Nicks acknowledged the challenges involved in developing younger players and the need for patience. Meanwhile, Tom Lynch, a dual premiership-winning Tiger, admitted that the road to recovery would take time but expressed belief in the team’s ability to succeed quickly.
Lynch told The Age that while the team has not started the season as well as they hoped, they are focused on improving and making progress. He emphasized the importance of coaching, support, and the development of young players, stating that the wins will come with continued effort and dedication.
