Remembering Alan Rothwell: A Beloved Actor and Character Creator
Alan Rothwell, a cherished actor known for his role in the iconic British soap opera Coronation Street, has passed away at the age of 89. His family confirmed the sad news following a brief illness. Rothwell was best recognized for portraying David Barlow, the brother of the beloved character Ken Barlow, in the original cast of the show during the 1960s.
Born in Oldham in 1937, Rothwell made his debut in the very first episode of Coronation Street in December 1960. This marked the beginning of a long and distinguished career that spanned over seven decades. He worked across radio, television, film, and stage, showcasing his versatility as an actor and director.
Rothwell’s family shared a heartfelt statement about his passing, highlighting his professional achievements and personal qualities. The statement read:
“Alan was a professional radio, television, film and stage actor and director whose career spanned more than 70 years. Alan died peacefully in hospital following a short illness. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle. He will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues and the many people whose lives he touched through his work.”

“We’re very sorry to hear of Alan Rothwell’s passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family at this very sad time. He created an iconic and memorable character in David Barlow and will forever be remembered as one of the original cast members of Coronation Street.”
Fellow Coronation Street star Samia Longchambon, who plays Maria Connor, paid tribute to Rothwell. She said:
“So sad to hear this. Alan was also a drama teacher at our drama school and I have such fond memories of being taught by him… he was a wonderful man.”
Career Highlights and Notable Roles
Alan Rothwell’s career took off when he landed the role of David Barlow in Coronation Street upon its TV debut in 1960. David made on-and-off returns between 1963 and 1964, before becoming a mainstay once more until his exit in 1968.
David Barlow was famously different from his brother Ken, who had a love for literature. Instead, David pursued a career in football, though he was forced to retire after sustaining an injury during a match. David was killed off-screen two years after his last appearance.
Away from Coronation Street, Rothwell appeared in several other soaps. He played a community lawyer in Brookside shortly after its debut in 1985 and took on the role of Nicholas Black in the Channel 4 soap for a year. Nicholas was the husband of original Brookside character Heather Black and appeared in 56 episodes.

Rothwell also appeared in Emmerdale, playing a judge in 1993 and the more regular part of John Kenyon between 1997 and 1998. He also appeared in Casualty, playing various parts over the years. In addition to his work in soaps, he starred in Queer As Folk, The Musketeers, and All Creatures Great and Small.
Personal Life and Legacy
Rothwell was married to Marjorie Ward from 1961 until their divorce in March 1967. They had two children together. He later married Maureen Haydon in April 1967, and they remained married until 1999. Together, they also had two children.
Throughout his life, Rothwell left a lasting impact on the entertainment industry and those who knew him personally. His contributions to television, film, and theater are celebrated, and his legacy continues through the characters he brought to life.
