Munster smashes Eels to secure Origin spot

Cameron Munster Shines as Melbourne Secures Crucial Win

Queensland captain Cameron Munster delivered a standout performance as Melbourne secured a 34-8 victory over Parramatta at the Magic Round. The win marked a significant turning point for the Storm, who managed to end their seven-game losing streak and secure back-to-back wins for the first time since round two.

Munster played a pivotal role in the match, contributing to one of the tries of the season and scoring a four-pointer himself. He also set up Cooper Clarke and Harry Grant for additional tries, showcasing his leadership and skill on the field. His performance was praised by Storm coach Craig Bellamy, who described him as “tremendous” during the game.

Despite the victory, Melbourne still finished the weekend outside the top eight, but the team’s improved form has given them a renewed sense of hope. The resurgence of Munster and captain Grant has been particularly encouraging, especially after their struggles during the losing streak. Their strong performances have also brought relief to Maroons coach Billy Slater ahead of the upcoming Origin series.

Munster’s form has even caused some concern for Bellamy, who is a New South Welshman. The coach joked about Munster possibly timing his performance for the Origin series, saying, “He might’ve just been timing his run into Origin.” Bellamy added that Munster has been maturing over the past month, which has made him a formidable opponent.

A Stellar Team Effort

The Storm’s success was not solely due to Munster’s efforts. The team’s “big three” – Munster, Grant, and Jahrome Hughes – worked together to create one of the standout tries of the season. Grant spotted the Eels’ markers and broke through the ruck to find Munster in support. Hughes then wrapped around and triggered a shift to the left, resulting in Jack Howarth scoring from a 60-metre break.

In the second half, Grant ran out of dummy half to Hughes, who passed a beautiful flat ball for Munster to score. Munster then cut inside and found Clarke with a short pass, following a 25m run earlier in the half. After Sua Fa’alogo’s 75m run, Munster completed the try for Grant, sealing the Storm’s win.

Tactical Challenges and Errors

Both teams struggled with ball handling throughout the match, combining for 17 errors in the first half alone. The total number of errors reached 31 by the end of the game. One notable moment came when Davvy Moale dropped the ball as Melbourne regained possession in the second half. Brian Kelly then returned the favor by making an error during a Parramatta scrum play.

The Eels’ mistakes made it difficult for likely NSW playmaker Mitch Moses to make an impact in his final game before the Origin teams are announced. Coach Jason Ryles acknowledged the opportunities the team created but admitted they failed to capitalize on them.

Defensive Highlights and Injuries

Josh Addo-Carr, a candidate for a NSW wing spot, did not score but made a remarkable defensive play by tackling Moses Leo after the winger’s 60m dash. He also ankle-tapped Fa’alogo just as the fullback looked certain to score in the second half.

Storm winger Leo suffered a knee injury in a tackle from Jack Williams and Saxon Pryke in the second half and did not finish the game. This injury could have a significant impact on the team’s future performances.
