The final episode of Saturday Night Live UK on May 16 was a memorable night for fans, as it featured some iconic cameos that left the audience in stitches. Among the highlights was a live sketch titled “Looking Theroux The Mirror,” which showcased the talents of cast member Larry Dean, who delivered an impressive impression of documentary maker Louis Theroux.
In the sketch, Dean portrayed Theroux with uncanny accuracy, delivering lines that captured the essence of the renowned presenter. “I’m Louis Theroux, the perspective documentarian who makes documentaries about difficult subjects like cults, prisons, and Ann Widdecombe. I’ve had tapas with the Tiger King and done karaoke with the KKK,” he said, perfectly mimicking Theroux’s style.
The scene continued with Dean speaking into a pseudo-mirror while another version of Theroux, played by Al Nash, responded. However, the surprise didn’t end there, as host and Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa also appeared dressed as Theroux, wearing the same wig and shirt. This triple threat of Theroux characters created a hilarious dynamic, with all three using phrases associated with the real Louis Theroux, such as “Can I say that? Is that fair to say?” and “Are you finding this awkward?”
As the sketch reached its climax, the real Louis Theroux made a surprise appearance, prompting massive cheers from the audience. “I’m sorry to be a bother, but you’re actually being quite loud. Is that fair to say?” he asked, leading to a humorous exchange between the four characters.
The group then shared a moment of confusion, with one of them stating, “I learned a lot on my trip to the Travel Lodge. Over the course of the weekend, the Louis’ and I swapped many stories and much saliva. Yes, we had a four-way tongue kiss.” Another added, “I was too bashful to ask reception for water. So, I ravaged my way through those tiny UHD milks and I hurt all eight of my thumbs opening the packets. Is that right? Is that fair to say?”
Viewers took to social media to express their excitement about the sketch and the presence of the real Louis Theroux. One person wrote, “This Louis Theroux sketch is so good hahah.” Another exclaimed, “ACTUAL LOUIS THEROUX APPEARANCE???!!!!” A third commented, “It’s still so mad to me that they actually got Louis Theroux.” Meanwhile, a fourth person said, “That Louis Theroux sketch might just be the best one of the series. I was cackling like a loon. Was that fair to say?” And a fifth added, “Louis Theroux interviewing Louis Theroux in a mirror at Travelodge.”
The cameos didn’t stop there. During the Weekend Update segment, Ayoade Bamgboye shared some unconventional tips on managing personal finance. He suggested that debt could be seen as just numbers, while HMRC could be treated as just letters. His advice even included breaking into a house belonging to someone with old money and selling their belongings—including their children—on Facebook Marketplace.
When questioned about the validity of his advice, Bamgboye called upon the Money Saving Expert himself, Martin Lewis, who made a surprise appearance. Lewis responded, “Your heart is in the right place,” but quickly added, “But I can’t condone this advice. You should not sell children on Facebook Marketplace—Vinted is way more lucrative.”
Fans were thrilled to see Martin Lewis on the show, with one person writing, “MARTIN LEWIS MONEY SAVING EXPERT???!!!!!! HUGE MOMENT!!!!!!!” Another added, “They got Martin Lewis money saving expert hahah this is EVERYTHING.” A third person noted, “I know Ayoade Bamgboye is losing her mind right now being in the same room as Martin Lewis money saving expert.” Others joked, “Martin Lewis AND Louis Theroux cameos, and they say Britain has no culture.”
The episode also featured a hilarious sketch involving the legendary Mr Blobby, who appeared alongside host Ncuti Gatwa in a sinister yet comedic performance. Viewers celebrated the return of the spotty character, with many expressing their delight. One person remarked, “How do you even begin to explain to someone who didn’t grow up in the UK during the 90s and 2000s what this f*a polka dot monstrosity is.” Another said, “Omg they’re doing a horror skit about Mr Blobby! This has been a long time coming.” A third added, “Knew they wouldn’t do a season without a Mr Blobby mention.” Others praised the character, saying, “Mr Blobby remains the most employed guy on British TV, it’s actually insane.” And a fifth person noted, “Americans learning about Mr Blobby and Martin Lewis through this episode… you just can’t say the UK has no culture.” Finally, a sixth person summed it up: “Louis Theroux and Mr Blobby back-to-back. Proper British institution already!”
