Auckland FC’s Journey to the Grand Final
Auckland FC coach Steve Corica has highlighted how the challenges of last season played a crucial role in shaping his team’s success this year, leading them to their first A-League Men grand-final appearance. The club had already made history by winning the premiership in their debut season, but they fell short after a semi-final loss to Melbourne Victory. This time around, however, they proved their mettle with a decisive 4-1 aggregate victory over Adelaide United, culminating in a 3-0 win at Coopers Stadium on Friday.

The match was marked by key moments that showcased the team’s determination and tactical discipline. Jake Girwood-Reich opened the scoring with a header from a Lachlan Brook corner in the 44th minute, followed by Sam Cosgrove doubling the lead from the penalty spot just before the hour mark. Substitute Logan Rogerson sealed the win with a goal in the 88th minute, securing a memorable victory for the side.
“I think we learned our lessons from last year,” Corica reflected. “We took our chances tonight at the right times. We defended well, we did well in both boxes, and I’m extremely proud of the effort and the performance because we know they’re a good footballing team, but we didn’t allow them to play their stuff.”
The previous encounter in Auckland had been a more evenly matched affair, ending in a 1-1 draw. Corica emphasized that being underdogs was a source of motivation for his team. “We knew everyone wrote us off, and that was motivation. But we knew what we had in the change room. We’ve had our fair share of injuries, and we still have them, but we showed the depth in the squad with our subs coming on and doing a good job, including Logan Rogerson scoring the third goal.”
Corica also noted the importance of maintaining composure during the match. “We wanted to remain calm coming into the game; we didn’t want to get too excited because then we don’t perform at a good level. But the boys were up for it from the start, defensively. We played some good stuff as well, and we hurt them on the counter.”
Adelaide United’s coach, Airton Andrioli, acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but praised his team’s efforts throughout the season. “I think we had a fantastic season,” he said. “But we’re disappointed; we thought we could go all the way. They scored the goals at the right moments, and we didn’t. So congratulations to them.”
Emerging Talent and Future Prospects
Despite the setback, there was a silver lining for Adelaide United, as the success of Auckland FC this season highlighted the growing pool of young talent within the league. Players like Ethan Alagich, Jonny Yull, Yaya Dukuly, Panagiotis Kikianis, and joint Golden Boot winner Luka Jovanovic have continued to mature and excel. Additionally, a new generation of promising players has emerged.
Ryan White, who won the club champion award in just his second season, and Brody Burkitt, who scored a hat-trick on his debut against Brisbane Roar, are among those making waves. Harry Crawford also caught attention by equalizing in the first leg against Auckland.
Andrioli recognized the potential for these young stars to move on to bigger opportunities. “If they do move on, we can consider that a success because that’s what we pride ourselves on as a club — to develop and bring players to the next level.”
