‘Nemesis’ creator Courtney A Kemp defies Netflix for season 2 finale

Courtney A. Kemp has a clear vision for Season 2 of her gripping show, Nemesis, on Netflix. However, the first season ended in a way that left many viewers wondering about the future of the series. Despite some direct guidance from the streaming platform for a definitive conclusion, the show concluded with an open-ended twist. While many creators, including Kemp, are hopeful for a second season, Netflix has been known to avoid ambiguous endings in case a show gets cancelled—something that happens frequently.

Kemp has already demonstrated her creative prowess with successful series like Power. But will Nemesis be able to replicate that success and secure a second season? Kemp made sure to deliver an explosive ending in an effort to increase the show’s chances of continuation.

Courtney A. Kemp opens up about the ending of Nemesis

The hit show Nemesis follows LAPD detective Isaiah Stiles as he pursues criminal mastermind and thief Coltrane Wilder. The series ends with the detective allowing his nemesis to escape after enduring significant chaos and danger in his pursuit. Creator Courtney A. Kemp chose this ending because it aligned with the team’s original vision, despite Netflix’s instructions to wrap it up in a way that wouldn’t necessitate a second season.

“Netflix asked us to wrap it in a place where you wouldn’t need a second season, and I was like, ‘Bet, we’re not doing that,’” Kemp told The Hollywood Reporter.

She added, “But we knew that we did not want Coltrane to get caught. We didn’t want it to feel like you did all this for nothing, in a sense.”

While the show has not yet been officially renewed for another season, it is already performing well. Nemesis, which holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is trending in over 80 countries and ranks second behind Berlin and The Lady with an Ermine. Additionally, Kemp, during an Instagram Live session via Primetimer, revealed that they have already developed a blueprint for Season 2.

So, there is more to the story of Coltrane Wilder

Coltrane Wilder managed to escape in Season 1 of the show, leaving fans eager for more. Courtney A. Kemp has hinted at potential storylines for Season 2, although she hasn’t shared too many details. She explained that the story would continue with Coltrane trying to reunite with his pregnant wife, though it won’t be an easy journey. More chaos can be expected, especially for Stiles, who has lost a lot throughout the show’s eight thrilling episodes.

“I think we have made it pretty clear that there are some more consequences coming for Stiles,” Kemp told The Hollywood Reporter.

“And I think we have definitely ended the season where Coltrane’s gonna have to go find his wife. And that’s pretty much all I can say.”

The future of Nemesis remains uncertain

The ending of Nemesis Season 1 was far from clean, strongly suggesting the possibility of a second season. However, Netflix has previously canceled multiple shows despite strong hype and impressive numbers for various reasons. Now, it remains to be seen what fate awaits Nemesis.
