Housebound Fraudster Joins Gym Combat Classes While Serving £25k Sentence

A Woman’s Deception Uncovered: From Housebound Claims to Gym Sessions

A former nurse from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, has been sentenced to seven months in prison after being caught on camera participating in intense gym sessions while fraudulently receiving £25,244 in government benefits. Helen Green, 49, was described as ‘breathtakingly dishonest’ by the court for her actions.

Green, who is a wife and mother of a young daughter, was found guilty of claiming benefits based on false health conditions. She had previously claimed to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins, and knee problems. Her statements to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) suggested she could not walk more than 50 meters at a time and needed assistance with daily tasks. However, video evidence showed her taking part in body combat classes, lifting heavy bags, and running three 10k races between 2020 and 2021.

Evidence of Dishonesty

During the trial, the court viewed videos of Green attending various fitness classes, including body pump, Zumba, and spin. One video captured her exiting an Aldi store wearing gym gear and carrying two heavy shopping bags and a rucksack. The judge noted that this behavior contradicted her previous claims of physical limitations.

Judge Trevor Meegan emphasized that the most egregious act was Green’s participation in three 10k races, which he described as indicative of a high level of physical fitness. Prosecutors highlighted that Green had run the Market Drayton 10k in one hour and three minutes, a feat that would require significant effort.

In her defense, Green’s legal team argued that she had been advised by medical professionals to stay active. They also claimed that her ailments were real, but the extent of her condition was disputed. Green reportedly admitted to the DWP that she had been told to do ‘strength training’ during an interview, but prosecutors found her behavior fundamentally dishonest.

The Impact on Taxpayers

The case highlights the broader issue of benefit fraud and its impact on taxpayers. Judge Meegan stressed that PiP is a benefit paid to four million people across the country, and Green’s actions represented a crime against the public purse. He noted that her claim initially started legitimately, but she failed to disclose changes in her circumstances, leading to fraudulent activity.

The court heard that Green had been a member of the Shropshire Shufflers Running Club and had completed multiple 10k races. This contradicted her earlier claims of being unable to carry shopping bags or complete basic chores. The DWP investigation, prompted by reports of her running activities, led to the suspension of her payments in March 2023.

Sentencing and Aftermath

Green pleaded guilty in September 2025 to failing to notify a change in circumstances to obtain a benefit. Despite her remorse and efforts to repay the money, the court rejected calls for a suspended sentence. Judge Meegan emphasized that the offense was carried out over a prolonged period and demanded a deterrent sentence.

Outside the court, Green appeared tearful as she was informed of her sentence. Her husband was comforted by a family member following the verdict. The case has sparked discussions about the need for stricter checks on benefit claims and the importance of honesty in such matters.

Public Reaction and Lessons Learned

Minister for Transformation Andrew Western condemned Green’s actions, stating that it was a slap in the face to taxpayers and genuine claimants. He warned that the DWP would continue to investigate and hold individuals accountable for their actions.

Mandy Tobias of the Crown Prosecution Service praised the work of the DWP in uncovering Green’s deception, which led to her guilty plea. The case serves as a reminder that fraudulently obtaining benefits is not only illegal but also harmful to those who genuinely rely on such support.
