Australian Cop Dies in Machu Picchu Hiking Tragedy

A Dedicated Family Man and Travel Enthusiast

An Australian police officer who tragically lost his life while hiking to Peru’s iconic Machu Picchu is being remembered as a devoted family man with a deep love for travel. The body of Victorian Sergeant Matt Paton was recovered by Peruvian rescuers on Thursday local time from an abyss approximately 300 metres away from a trail leading to Machu Picchu.

Sgt Paton fell from the Inca Trail on Wednesday afternoon while traveling with a guided group heading to the ancient Inca citadel, one of South America’s most visited landmarks.

His relatives expressed their profound grief over the loss. “It seems surreal at the moment – everyone is bereft,” the family said in a statement on Friday. They highlighted that family was the most important aspect of Sgt Paton’s life. “He was dedicated to his family, including his wife of 31 years and their three children. He adored his family, and we adored him.”

The father of three had always dreamed of visiting Peru and had been studying Spanish before his trip. “He was always up for an adventure and to learn something new,” they added.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush praised Sgt Paton as a “wonderful, caring person.” “His colleagues and the entire policing family are devastated at the tragic loss,” Mr Bush said in a statement. He emphasized that Matt loved traveling, exploring historic sites, and experiencing different cultures. “He will be remembered for his selflessness, amazing sense of humour, extreme kindness, and inclusion of all.”

Peruvian authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Sgt Paton’s death. Victoria Police confirmed that his body has been taken to a morgue in the regional city of Urubamba for an autopsy. Local police informed ABC News that he fell after tripping through a damaged security barrier in a difficult-to-access section of the trail.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been providing consular assistance to the tourist’s family. “We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the department stated.

Machu Picchu, located 2430 metres above sea level on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, attracts thousands of visitors daily. It remains one of the most iconic and breathtaking destinations in the world, drawing travelers from across the globe to experience its rich history and natural beauty.
