Michelle Pfeiffer, 68, shares brutal challenges from Madison set

A Harsh Reality on Set

Michelle Pfeiffer, a 68-year-old Hollywood icon, faced some of the toughest conditions while filming Taylor Sheridan’s The Madison in Montana. According to her recent interview with the Los Angeles Times podcast, In Conversation: The Madison, the production had no normal accommodations. The experience was far from luxurious, and it presented several challenges for the cast and crew.

One of the most difficult aspects of filming in such a remote location was the lack of basic facilities. Pfeiffer revealed that there were no toilets available, and even the outhouse seen in the series was fake. This forced the actors to do their business out in the bushes. “You may as well be in a tent because, you know, there is no bathroom,” she said. “Even the outhouse is not real. So there’s no AC, there’s no plumbing, there isn’t anything. But it is breathtakingly glorious.”

Challenges of the Environment

The extreme weather conditions also added to the difficulties. During the summer, the heat was intense, and Pfeiffer often used an umbrella for shade, as there was little natural cover. In contrast, the winter brought freezing temperatures, prompting the use of coats and space heaters.

Hollywood stars are typically known for retreating to trailers between scenes, but this option was not available for Pfeiffer and her co-stars. The show was shot in 360 degrees, which meant that traditional trailers could not be used. “We didn’t really have trailers there because they were shooting 360 [degrees]. So, they couldn’t have a bunch of trailers around,” Pfeiffer explained. “There was really no place for us to sit. There was no bathroom nearby. There was no food. And in the winter, it was cold. It was like, ‘Could we have a heater?’ And in the summer, it was like, ‘Could I get an umbrella because the sun’s really intense?’ It took us about halfway through to figure all of that out.”

A Leap of Faith

Pfeiffer’s decision to join The Madison was made without reading a script. She described it as a “leap of faith” based on her trust in Sheridan, who had previously created successful shows like Yellowstone and Tulsa King. “Taylor reached out to me and said he had an idea and would like to meet me,” she told Variety. “So I’m off to Texas, I went to his ranch and had a wonderful evening meeting people. He talked to me about the arc of the character and the concept of the show, and it was very broadly laid out. I said, ‘Okay, when could I read something?’ He said, ‘Well, I’d like to know who I’m writing for before I start writing. So after you commit.’”

To ensure she was making the right choice, Pfeiffer called her friend Helen Mirren, who had worked on Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1923. Mirren gave a positive review of Sheridan, which helped Pfeiffer decide to sign on to The Madison without seeing a script.

Emotional Depth and Personal Reflections

The Madison explores themes of grief and loss, particularly through Pfeiffer’s character, Stacy Clyburn, who struggles to keep her family together after losing her husband, played by Kurt Russell. Pfeiffer shared how personal experiences with loss have shaped her understanding of these emotions. “For a brief amount of time, all that really matters is connection with other human beings,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I remember feeling it a couple of times in my life when I suffered losing someone who was meaningful to me. I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, how can I hold on to this?’ It felt so good and so real and authentic and safe…”

She also reflected on the difficulty of navigating life after a significant loss. “When you have grown up with someone and you’re so entangled with each other, after a while, you don’t really even know where you end and the other person begins. How do you even start to imagine your life without them and rebuild when everything you knew has fallen apart?”

A Successful Show

Despite the challenges, The Madison has been well-received, and it has already been renewed for a second season. Pfeiffer’s performance has been praised for its emotional depth and authenticity, showcasing her talent as an actress. Her commitment to the role, despite the harsh conditions, highlights her dedication to her craft. As the show continues, fans will undoubtedly look forward to seeing how her character evolves and how the story unfolds in the next season.
