A Test of Resilience and Leadership
Richmond coach Adem Yze has praised Tom Lynch for his unwavering determination after the veteran forward played through pain in a crucial 18-point victory over Essendon. The match, held at the MCG as part of the annual Dreamtime At The ‘G contest, saw several players from both teams sustain injuries.
Lynch suffered an injury to his throat during the game and was among three players taken to hospital following the intense clash between the two lowest-ranked teams on the ladder. Alongside him, Essendon’s Andrew McGrath (broken jaw) and Archie May (ribs) were also sent to the hospital after a brutal encounter.

Despite the injury, Lynch continued to play and finished with two goals, including a critical one in the final quarter that helped secure Richmond’s 10.14 (74) to 7.14 (56) win. This result marked a significant milestone for the Tigers, lifting them off the bottom of the ladder and coinciding with the celebration of premiership star Jayden Short’s 200th game.
“He’s a tough bugger and he’s a leader of our footy club for a reason,” Yze said of Lynch after the match. “At halftime we thought he was going to hospital but he didn’t want to – he wanted to play for Shorty.”

Lynch was unable to speak due to the throat injury, leaving the extent of his condition unclear. However, Yze emphasized that there was no risk of further damage from playing on. “It’s funny, he’s the godfather of our forward line and we need him to talk and lead, so we put it on our younger forwards to shoulder that load.”
While Lynch was unable to communicate effectively for the rest of the game, his presence and aerial power were vital to the team’s success. After the match, Lynch went to the hospital for scans as a precaution. “I’m really proud of his effort,” Yze added.
Another key player, Jonty Faull, also suffered a concussion, compounding the challenges faced by the Tigers. Meanwhile, Essendon endured even greater difficulties, losing Sam Durham (concussion) and Matt Guelfi (hamstring) early in the game, along with McGrath later in the second term.
Jye Caldwell played through a leg injury, while May left the field late in the match. Yze acknowledged the impact of these losses on Essendon. “You can’t shy away from the fact that Essendon had three really good players that are off the field before halftime. It just puts so much pressure and load onto the rest of their crew.”
Despite the challenges, Yze expressed pride in his team’s performance. “But at the same time we had a job to do and I’m really proud of the boys.”
Injury Challenges and Future Prospects
Richmond currently has 18 players on a league-worst injury list, though some are expected to return soon. Dion Prestia, Sam Banks, and Maurice Rioli are all nearing full fitness. However, young talent Tom Sims suffered a knee injury during a VFL match on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, who made his return after a long injury layoff, sustained a medial collateral ligament injury and will undergo further assessment. His absence is a setback for the team as they prepare for a challenging match against Sydney at the SCG in round 12.
With a goal of securing consecutive wins for the first time this season, the Tigers will need to rely on their resilience and depth to overcome the current challenges.
