Cameron McInnes to Leave NRL and Join York Knights
Cameron McInnes, the long-serving captain of the Sharks, is set to leave the National Rugby League (NRL) at the end of the current season. The 32-year-old forward has signed a long-term deal with the York Knights, a Super League club based in the UK. This marks a significant shift in his career as he prepares to finish his rugby league journey overseas.
McInnes had previously been linked with a move to the Perth Bears for their inaugural 2028 season. However, it now appears that he will instead conclude his career in England after failing to secure a multi-year contract with Cronulla or any other NRL club. The Sharks have indicated that McInnes was unlikely to be offered an extension beyond 2026 due to salary cap constraints.
Despite being unsigned for the upcoming season, McInnes remains one of the most respected players in the game, known for his toughness and dedication. He has made over 230 appearances across the Rabbitohs, Dragons, and Sharks, and played one State of Origin match for the NSW Blues in the 2024 series.
McInnes faced a major setback last season when he suffered an ACL rupture, but he managed to return to action for the Sharks in round eight. His resilience and determination have always been hallmarks of his career.
He will join former Dragons teammate Paul Vaughan at the recently-promoted York Knights, who are aiming to establish themselves as a strong presence in the UK competition. York coach Mark Applegarth expressed his enthusiasm about the potential signing, stating:
“Cam is a quality player and I think anyone that has followed rugby league for the last few years would know that. Is he a player that I’d be interested in? 100 per cent he is, not only for what he can do on the field but I think culturally with the standards that a player like that sets.”
McInnes has also been exploring opportunities outside of football, including delivering his own TedX Talk on his career and the challenges he has faced with injuries. His journey has inspired many within and beyond the sport.
Cronulla still has several players without contracts for the next season, including Toby Rudolf, Braden Hamlin-Uele, Jesse Ramien, Sione Katoa, and Sam Stonestreet. Meanwhile, Siosifa Talakai signed with the Bears before his contract expired.
As the 2026 NRL season approaches, fans can watch all the action live and free on Nine and 9Now. McInnes’ departure from the NRL marks the end of an era for the Sharks and the broader rugby league community. His legacy will undoubtedly be remembered for his grit, leadership, and contributions to the game.
