Aussie Olympic star criticises James Magnussen over drug-fuelled disaster at Enhanced Games

A Controversial Start to the Enhanced Games

The inaugural Enhanced Games, an event that has sparked significant controversy in the world of sports, saw a mix of reactions from athletes and fans alike. Among those expressing their views was world record-breaking swimmer Cam McEvoy, who took a clear shot at the event after his fellow Australian, James Magnussen, finished last in both his races.

Kristian Gkolomeev, a Greek swimmer, managed to go under McEvoy’s 50m freestyle world record time by just 0.07 seconds. This achievement, however, came with a heavy dose of controversy. Gkolomeev also won the 100m freestyle, while Magnussen struggled in both events, finishing last out of four swimmers. His times were far below his personal bests, despite having taken performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) to prepare for the Games.

This situation prompted a social media post from McEvoy, who had previously broken the official 50m world record in March. His message read, “Seriously?! That’s all you got!” The sentiment echoed among many fans, who criticized the event and its pro-doping ethos.

Public Reaction and Criticism

The Enhanced Games have been widely denounced by world sporting authorities, and fans have also condemned those who participated in the event. Social media was flooded with comments questioning the legitimacy of the results. One user wrote, “So an enhanced suit that would have (been) banned in comp, and PEDS only eked him (Gkolomeev) the record by 0.07 seconds?” Another added, “No one is impressed with these results.”

Others were more direct, with one comment stating, “Lmao this is pathetic, Barely sets a WR juiced out of his mind.” Another claimed, “This isn’t a world record … it’s an abomination of sport.” The disappointment was palpable, especially when considering Magnussen’s poor performance.

Gkolomeev’s time of 20.81 seconds surpassed McEvoy’s 20.88 world mark, but it will not be recognized as an official record because he used banned substances. Additionally, he was wearing a race suit long banned by swimming authorities.

Financial Incentives and Athlete Participation

Despite the controversy, the event offered substantial financial incentives. Gkolomeev won a $US1 million ($A1.39m) bonus for going under the world record time. He described the prize money as life-changing, stating, “This is going to change my life to the good, for sure. And yeah, I’m going to continue next year. Maybe I’ll break it again.”

However, for Australia’s only competitor, the experience was less than ideal. Magnussen, a two-time Olympian and dual 100m freestyle world champion, finished last in both the 50m and 100m freestyle. His times were well outside his personal bests, which he set over a decade ago.

Gkolomeev won the 100m in 46.6 seconds, just outside the world record time of 46.4 set by China’s Pan Zhanle at the Paris Olympics. The financial lure was substantial, with $US250,000 ($A358,000) on offer for race winners and a $US1 million bonus for breaking the 100m freestyle or 50m world record times.

The Founding and Growth of the Enhanced Games

The Enhanced Games were founded by Melbourne-born entrepreneur Aron D’Souza, who later left the company that became The Enhanced Group. On May 8, the company officially launched on the New York Stock Exchange with a reported $1.2 billion enterprise valuation.

Performance-enhancing drugs being taken by athletes like Magnussen are being marketed and sold by The Enhanced Group. Despite this, several athletes who claimed to be clean won events at the Games. American Fred Kerley and Tristan Evelyn from Barbados took out the 100m sprints, while Hunter Armstrong from the US claimed the men’s 50m backstroke.

The event has raised serious questions about the future of sports and the ethics surrounding performance enhancement. As the debate continues, the legacy of the Enhanced Games remains uncertain.
