Stephen Crichton Ready to Prove Critics Wrong in State of Origin
Stephen Crichton, the Canterbury Bulldogs’ captain and a key player for New South Wales in the State of Origin series, has expressed his readiness to face the challenges ahead. After a demanding NRL season, Crichton is eager to showcase his abilities and address the doubts that have surrounded his performance.
Crichton has been dealing with a shoulder injury since Good Friday, often relying on pain relief to play for the Bulldogs during a difficult season. His form has come under scrutiny, and he has been on restricted training as he prepares for the opening game of the Origin series in Sydney on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Crichton showed optimism about his physical condition and the team’s preparation. He was seen wearing heavy padding on his right shoulder but emphasized that his body is feeling better than it has in a while.
“I’m very excited for this week and the opportunity to represent NSW again,” Crichton said. “The body’s probably the best it’s felt. I got to rest up for a couple of days, which is good for the body and for the mind as well.”
He also highlighted the positive energy from his teammates during training sessions. “Our preparation has been really good, and I can’t fault the execution and the energy the boys have been bringing in for game one.”
Crichton is considered a strong candidate to step in at fullback if James Tedesco faces any issues during the match at Accor Stadium. The 25-year-old has played in all three games of the previous State of Origin series, where the Blues lost 2-1 after winning the first game in Brisbane.
Despite the Bulldogs’ struggles this season, Crichton acknowledges that he was fortunate to be selected for the Blues. “There’s always fire in my belly to prove those people wrong, but I know who my inner circle is and the people to listen to,” he said.
He admitted that there will always be critics and doubters, but he remains focused on his own confidence and the support from his teammates. “As long as I’ve got the confidence in myself and the confidence in that room in there from the boys is the main thing. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re losing as well and a lot about the boys around you and your culture.”
Crichton is expected to play as left centre against rising star Rob Toia from the Sydney Roosters. At the club level, he has primarily played on the right side this year but has shifted to accommodate Kotoni Staggs, a tough competitor from the Brisbane Broncos.

Staggs, making his second Origin appearance since his debut four years ago, has impressed Crichton with his approach both on and off the field. “The way Kotoni runs and the aggression that he plays with, he’s definitely built for the Origin arena,” Crichton said.

“He’s shown great dedication not just on the field but also on days off, taking care of his body and mind. I know he’s going to go out there firing and take his opportunity this time. He’s going to be probably one of our best players in this game.”
