A New Addition to the Tigers
Richmond has made a significant move in the 2026 AFL Mid-Season Draft by selecting Kye Annand with pick two. The 200cm tall defender, who was plucked from Geelong’s VFL side, is expected to make an immediate impact at Punt Road. With the Tigers currently dealing with a long injury list, fans may not have to wait long to see Annand in action.
A Star in the VFL Young Guns
Annand gained attention as part of the VFL Young Guns team, which was coached by Jesse Cucinotta, the head of development at Box Hill. The team faced off against the Talent League Young Guns in late April, and it was during this time that Cucinotta had the opportunity to observe Annand’s talents up close.
Character First
Cucinotta emphasized the importance of character when discussing Annand. He shared an anecdote about a captain’s run held in Dingley, where Annand, despite being from Geelong, showed remarkable commitment. “He was the first one on the message, saying he would love to come but couldn’t make it,” Cucinotta said. “The way he communicated from the start and the impression he made upon joining the group was fantastic.”
Annand, who has been part of the VFL system for four years, demonstrated leadership and energy. His calm demeanor and ability to energize the team were notable. “We ended up selecting him as captain just by meeting him that morning,” Cucinotta added. “That speaks volumes about his character.”
From Ocean Grove to the VFL
Annand’s football journey began at Ocean Grove and Queenscliff before he moved through the ranks at Geelong Falcons and into the Cats’ VFL program. Since 2023, he has played 26 games, showcasing his skills and dedication.
A Lookalike of Tom Stewart
Cucinotta noted that Annand reminded him of another mature age recruit from the Cattery, Tom Stewart. “Box Hill played Geelong a couple of weeks earlier, and it’s hard not to notice him in the white and blue hoops,” Cucinotta said. “He has long blonde hair, and you can’t help but compare him to Tom Stewart.”
During the Young Guns games, Cucinotta observed how Annand’s game reading abilities were exceptional. “He was one of the better performers on the day,” he said. “I’ve been keeping an eye on him since that game, and he’s had some strong performances at VFL level.”
Ready for the Top Level
Annand was taken out of Geelong’s last VFL match to ensure he was fit and ready for draft night. Cucinotta believes that given his experience, mature body, and well-rounded skill set, Annand is ready to play at the top level for Richmond immediately. His ability to read the game, combined with his athleticism and aggression as a defender, makes him a valuable addition to the Tigers’ squad.
