Ivan Cleary Expresses Confidence in Dylan Edwards Despite NSW Omission
Ivan Cleary, the coach of the Penrith Panthers, has expressed his belief that star fullback Dylan Edwards will be more motivated following his omission from the New South Wales (NSW) State of Origin squad. Edwards, who has been instrumental in the Panthers’ rise to the top of the table, is currently in better form than he was last year when he was selected as the Blues’ fullback.
The decision to exclude Edwards from the NSW team came down to a tough choice between two outstanding players, with James Tedesco ultimately being recalled for the opening game of the State of Origin series. Despite this setback, Cleary believes Edwards’ determination will only grow.
“It is a contentious selection and obviously a close one,” Cleary said. “Dyl has been playing awesome. Everyone knows that so I guess it gives him a little bit more fire. That would be good, but if he just keeps playing the way he is, I will be happy.”

Casey McLean Earns Spot on NSW Bench
Cleary also shared his excitement about the inclusion of strike centre Casey McLean on the NSW extended bench, which could see him make his debut. McLean has shown significant improvement this season and has earned his place in the team through consistent performances.
“Casey has come on leaps and bounds,” Cleary said. “He has started this year strongly again. He has certainly earned his spot in that team, and I am looking forward to what role he plays.”
Strategic Approach to the Match Against the Warriors
This week’s match against the Warriors is different for Cleary, as it is being held in Sydney on a Sunday night. This provides an opportunity for the Origin stars to rest and prepare for the upcoming State of Origin game.
“This week is a little different. The game is in Sydney, and we have got a Sunday night game, so it is probably the best chance (for the Origins stars) to back up,” Cleary explained. “Sometimes you are given little or no chance. As usual, we will have a bunch of different plans. The (Origin) game will be played on Wednesday, and we will work out what we are going to do after that.”

A Competitive Match Against Former Club
Cleary, who previously coached the Warriors to the 2011 grand final and played for them, expects a challenging encounter against his former club. The Warriors have been consistently strong this season, with several players performing at a high level.
“They have been super consistent and have a lot of players in good form. They do the basics well,” Cleary said. “They are playing well. It’s exciting.”
Last year, Cleary rested his Origin players and led the Panthers to a stunning 28-18 away win over the Warriors, which was part of a nine-game winning streak that eventually took them to the preliminary final. With the same level of determination and preparation, Cleary is confident in his team’s ability to perform well in this crucial match.
