A Special Birthday Celebration with a Bittersweet Twist
King Frederik and Queen Mary made a special appearance on the balcony of Frederik VIII’s Palace in Amalienborg, Copenhagen, to celebrate the monarch’s 58th birthday. The event was a significant moment for the royal family, but it came with a bittersweet undertone. Just a day before the celebration, His Majesty’s mother, Queen Margrethe II, was hospitalised again following a heart attack. This news added a layer of concern to what would otherwise be a joyous occasion.
The Danish and Australian couple, known for their strong family bonds, had only two of their four children join them for the birthday festivities. Twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, aged 15, who recently celebrated their confirmation, waved to the large crowds gathered outside the palace. Their older siblings, Crown Prince Christian, 20, and Princess Isabella, 19, were not present at the event.
It is believed that the King’s birthday is not a public holiday in Denmark, which may have contributed to the absence of the older children. Additionally, Crown Prince Christian is currently undergoing intensive military training, while Princess Isabella is just weeks away from graduating high school.
During the event, King Frederik was seen wearing a blue pinstripe suit paired with a pink tie, and he sported a beard. Queen Mary, on the other hand, opted for a chic grey rosette blouse with white trousers and coral drop earrings, showcasing her elegant style.
A new portrait of the King in uniform, taken in the Throne Hall at Christiansborg Castle, was released by the Danish Royal Household on social media to mark his birthday. The palace also shared a video of the celebrations, highlighting the large crowds that filled the grounds of Amalienborg. Among the Danish flags, a few Australian flags could be seen, reflecting the growing acceptance of Queen Mary as a beloved figure in Denmark.
Australian-born Mary became queen 20 years after marrying into one of the world’s oldest monarchies. She met then-Crown Prince Frederik during the Sydney Olympics, and since then, she has been warmly embraced by the Danish people. Her presence is celebrated with pride, as evidenced by the display of Australian flags at such events.
Queen Margrethe’s Health Struggles
Queen Margrethe II stepped down from the throne in January 2024 after a 52-year reign. Her decision came after several health challenges in the previous year, including major back surgery. However, her health issues have continued to affect her recent months.
The 86-year-old monarch suffered a heart attack earlier this month and spent five days in the hospital before being discharged. She was expected to continue her recovery at home. Unfortunately, on Monday, she was readmitted to Rigshospitalet after a large blood clot was discovered on her hip, which resulted from a fall in September. The Danish Royal Household confirmed that she will remain in the hospital for several days.
This latest hospitalisation adds to the concerns surrounding Queen Margrethe’s health, and the royal family is likely to be closely monitoring her condition. Despite these challenges, the Danish public continues to show support for the former monarch, who has played a significant role in the country’s history.
As the royal family navigates these difficult times, the focus remains on celebrating the life and achievements of King Frederik, while also keeping a watchful eye on the well-being of Queen Margrethe. The upcoming days will be crucial for the family as they balance personal milestones with the ongoing challenges of maintaining their public duties.
