Exclusive: Geelong Star’s Local Footy Miracle Man Gives Hope

The ACL Survivor’s Journey

At Sorrento, located on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, James Hallahan is known as the “ACL survivor.” As the playing coach of the Sorrento Sharks, he has a unique perspective on overcoming serious injuries. His experience with a ruptured ACL and his remarkable return to play have given him a special interest in Gryan Miers’ extraordinary journey in the AFL.

Miers is currently pushing to continue playing despite suffering a standard ACL rupture, an injury that typically requires surgery. However, he has managed to play the past two games for the Cats without undergoing the usual surgical procedure. This bold decision has caught the attention of many, including Hallahan, who believes it demonstrates that there are alternative paths to recovery beyond traditional surgery.

“I think what Miers is doing is incredible. It gives you more confidence that there are more ways than going under the knife,” Hallahan said, reflecting on Miers’ approach.

A Personal Story of Resilience

Hallahan himself experienced a similar situation in June 2019 when he suffered an ACL rupture during a seemingly routine play. “I ran over a ground ball, doubled back, planted my right foot… it just popped,” he recalled. An MRI scan confirmed a ruptured ACL, but no damage to surrounding ligaments.

After consulting with several doctors, the message was consistent: surgery was the only option. “I spoke to four or five doctors, and the message was all the same—surgery, surgery, surgery,” Hallahan said. Despite this, he decided to cancel his scheduled surgeries with Julian Feller and another surgeon.

This decision came after considering the broader context of his life at the time. His brother Mitch, a former AFL player with the Gold Coast and Hawthorn, was back at Sorrento, and the team was in a strong position in the league. “I thought if there’s ever a chance to win a flag with Mitch, it’s this year,” Hallahan explained.

Seeking Alternative Solutions

Instead of following the conventional path, Hallahan sought a second opinion from Carlton physio Craig Christie. “He said he could get me back for the finals, but added ‘you’ll need to do a hell of a lot of work’,” Hallahan remembered. Christie emphasized the need for discipline and commitment, advising him to treat himself like a professional athlete for the next eight to nine weeks.

The rehabilitation process involved intense strengthening exercises for the knee and hips, as well as learning to manage the knee under load. “I was running on day 15, changing direction on days 28-30,” Hallahan said. He returned to football in the ninth week, which coincided with the final home and away game of the season.

A Dream Realized

Hallahan’s hard work paid off as he helped the Sorrento Sharks secure a flag. He played with minimal strapping, fulfilling his dream of winning a championship alongside his brother Mitch.

In 2022, Hallahan finally underwent ACL repair after sustaining an unrelated meniscus injury. Despite this, he has no regrets about his journey. “No regrets,” he said. “It was pretty cool to go through it.”

Lessons Learned

Hallahan’s story highlights the importance of perseverance, alternative treatment options, and the power of determination. His experience serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges, proving that sometimes, the path to recovery isn’t always straightforward. It also underscores the value of seeking multiple opinions and being open to unconventional approaches. For athletes like Miers, Hallahan’s journey offers hope and encouragement that it’s possible to achieve great things even when faced with significant obstacles.
