Cassandra Thorburn’s Health Update and Cancer Journey
Cassandra Thorburn, the ex-wife of Karl Stefanovic, has shared a detailed update on her health as she continues to battle a rare form of cancer. The 55-year-old mother of three recently revealed that she was hospitalized after receiving her first dose of treatment, which she refers to as “red devil chemotherapy.” This treatment is known for its intense side effects, and Cassandra described the physical toll it has taken on her.
In a recent Instagram post, Cassandra opened up about the challenges of her daily life while undergoing treatment. She shared that she spent five days in the hospital and spoke candidly about the exhaustion that comes with chemotherapy. One of the most difficult aspects she mentioned was what she calls “lead legs,” a term she uses to describe the heavy, sluggish feeling in her lower body that makes walking a struggle.
Despite the difficulties, Cassandra remains determined and continues to work full-time from home. However, she admitted that some days are more challenging than others. Her resilience and commitment to maintaining her routine have been a source of inspiration for many.
A Powerful Message for Friends
Cassandra also shared a heartfelt message for friends and loved ones who are supporting someone through cancer treatment. She emphasized the importance of walking during chemotherapy, highlighting that oncologists often encourage this activity. Studies have shown that walking can improve outcomes for patients undergoing treatment.
“I’m out walking this morning and hoping you will share your stories about how you kept yourself walking during chemo treatment,” she wrote. “Lead legs is what I call it, but it’s the weight in the bottom part of the legs that makes it really hard to go for a walk. I find it after the first 10 minutes I can keep going, it’s the first 10 minutes that are hard for me.”
Cassandra encouraged others to remember that even small steps can make a big difference in the journey of cancer treatment.
Family Support During the Fight
Cassandra’s children have been a vital support system throughout her treatment. She recently shared that she has received her second dose of treatment, which she referred to as her “red devil friend.” Although the experience was difficult, she expressed a preference for being at home with her family rather than in the hospital.
Her 21-year-old daughter, Willow, recently returned from the UK to Australia to be with her mother following her diagnosis. A source shared that Willow arrived in time to celebrate her 21st birthday with the family. At the time of her diagnosis, Cassandra and Willow had planned a driving holiday in the UK, but Willow made the decision to return home to support her mother instead.
The insider noted that all three of the Stefanovic children are rallying around their mum as she continues her cancer journey.

Understanding Cassandra’s Cancer Diagnosis
Cassandra was diagnosed with triple-negative occult breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the disease. The term “occult” means that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes, but the primary tumor was not detected through imaging or clinical exams. She publicly announced her diagnosis in February 2026.
Throughout her journey, Cassandra has been open about her experiences, often sharing updates on Instagram. She has spoken about the challenges of finding the right information and the emotional impact of “cancer ghosting”—a term used to describe friends and family who disappear when someone is battling cancer.
In March, Cassandra shared a video where she discussed the positive feedback she has received from others who have found comfort in her openness. She said, “I have had a lot of feedback that sharing my diagnosis and being open to talking about this journey is not just leading to women going for that test they have put off, it is also helping those going through chemotherapy themselves by making them feel less alone on their journey.”
Cassandra’s honesty and courage continue to inspire those around her, offering hope and support to others facing similar challenges.
