Grateful: Saifiti’s 80-Minute Bench Moment in Origin 1

A Unique Position in the Origin Arena

Jacob Saifiti, a prop for the Newcastle Knights, has shared his thoughts on his experience during the first match of the State of Origin series. He revealed that he was aware of the possibility of not being involved in the game at all. However, there were moments when he almost stepped onto the field before halftime.

Saifiti was the only Blues player who did not take part in the match, with the Blues able to bring on an 18th player, Matt Burton, after Tolutau Koula was taken out due to foul play. In contrast, Queensland could only use 17 players in the contest.

The Decision to Stay on the Bench

Speaking to News Corp, Saifiti mentioned that he almost came onto the field before halftime. However, given that the Blues were trailing by 14 points at the break and needed to find points, he anticipated that he would not be brought on. Instead, Blayke Brailey was introduced as number 17, followed by Matt Burton coming on in the final minutes to help secure the Blues’ win that started the series.

“I knew with a six-man bench it was a possibility,” Saifiti told NewsCorp Newswire. “I was close to going on for Isaah Yeo just before halftime, but I knew at halftime we were chasing points, so it was a good chance I wasn’t going to get on.”

Strategic Decisions and Team Dynamics

After Tolu went down, it was a free interchange, but the Blues were still chasing points. Saifiti admitted that if they had been winning, he probably would have been brought on. However, the need for creativity meant that he wasn’t selected.

“I’ve been on the other side of it when we’re defending points. Then I was put back on, so that’s the game we play. If we had a loss, then it probably would have stung a bit more, but we won so that’s great. I would have loved to have got on, but I’ll take the win any day of the week.”

Loyalty and Gratitude

Saifiti is a staunch NSW supporter. Even if he wasn’t playing tonight or part of the squad, he would have been at home with his Blues jumper on. He expressed his gratitude for being part of the squad.

The Knights prop, who delivered a superb performance in a tight win over the Parramatta Eels on Saturday afternoon, was the only specialist prop on the bench. However, he was ignored, with Laurie Daley instead bringing Victor Radley, Cameron Murray, and Casey McLean into the contest.

Future Prospects

Saifiti is not guaranteed to retain his place for Origin 2. With Payne Haas set to return for the Brisbane Broncos on Sunday afternoon against the St George Illawarra Dragons, and provided he plays anywhere near his best, he is likely to be a strong contender for the Blues in Origin 2 as they aim to claim the series in straight sets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
