Matthew Perry’s Assistant Jailed 41 Months in Death Case

The Role of Matthew Perry’s Personal Assistant in His Death

Matthew Perry, the beloved star of Friends, passed away at the age of 54 on October 28, 2023. His death was attributed to a fatal overdose of ketamine, a drug that had become central to his life in the final months. Central to this tragic story was his live-in personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, who played a critical role in his descent into addiction and ultimately administered the lethal dose.

On Wednesday, Iwamasa received a sentence of three years and five months in prison, along with two years of probation and a $10,000 fine (approximately AUD$14,000). This marked the conclusion of a two-and-a-half-year legal process that followed Perry’s death. Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett, who presided over the case, described Iwamasa’s actions as “reckless,” not just on the day of Perry’s death but in the days leading up to it.

A Complex Legal Case

Iwamasa was the first individual to reach a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty in August 2024 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine resulting in death. He became a key witness in the case, providing crucial information about the chain of events that led to Perry’s death. However, the judge did not agree with all aspects of the prosecution’s argument, noting that there was no clear evidence of malicious intent.

During the sentencing, Iwamasa stood before the court and addressed Perry’s family and friends directly, expressing deep regret for his actions. “I’m horribly, horribly sorry, and I offer my condolences to you,” he said. “I’m just so sorry to have done these illegal acts that I will forever regret. I will take that to my grave.”

Despite his apology, Iwamasa showed no visible reaction to the sentence, and his father and brother were among those in the audience supporting him.

The Power Dynamics at Play

Iwamasa’s defense team argued that he acted under the direction of someone with more authority than himself. His lawyer, Alan Eisner, requested a six-month prison term with six months of home confinement, emphasizing that Iwamasa was loyal to Perry and merely trying to accommodate his needs.

However, Judge Garnett rejected this argument, stating, “Unwilling. Not unable. He could have said no.” She emphasized that Iwamasa had the power to make different choices.

Perry’s mother and sisters expressed their anger toward Iwamasa in letters to the court, stating that they held him responsible for the actor’s death. They believed he had been a long-time friend who should have helped Perry maintain sobriety rather than enabling his addiction.

Keith Morrison, Perry’s stepfather and a respected journalist, spoke on behalf of the family during the sentencing. “We really felt that he was part of the family,” he said. “We trusted him implicitly.” Morrison acknowledged the power imbalance but insisted that Iwamasa still had a choice in his actions.

A Darker Perspective

Lisa Ferguson, Perry’s business manager and now his estate executor, painted a more severe picture of Iwamasa’s role. She accused him of deliberately isolating Perry from others, including sober-living companions and medical professionals, to increase his own influence. “What you are is the monster that killed him,” she said. “You don’t deserve to be anywhere near him.”

Ferguson also criticized Iwamasa for showing no remorse since Perry’s death. “Matthew deserved to live,” she said. “You don’t.”

Throughout the sentencing, Iwamasa remained composed, looking directly at Morrison and Ferguson as they spoke.

The Broader Network

Iwamasa’s actions were part of a larger network of individuals involved in supplying Perry with ketamine. According to his plea agreement, he obtained the drug from another doctor, Salvador Plasencia, who was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison. Iwamasa also purchased ketamine from Erik Fleming, who was getting it from a street dealer. Fleming received a two-year sentence, while the dealer, Jasveen Sangha, known as “The Ketamine Queen,” was sentenced to 15 years.

The criminal investigation began shortly after Iwamasa discovered Perry dead in his Jacuzzi. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that ketamine was the primary cause of death, with drowning as a secondary factor.

A Tragic End to a Beloved Career

Matthew Perry rose to fame alongside Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, and Lisa Kudrow on Friends, one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. His career spanned decades, and he was widely loved by fans and colleagues alike.

His death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of addiction and the complex relationships that can form in the lives of public figures. Iwamasa’s sentencing marks the end of a painful chapter in Perry’s life, but it also raises important questions about responsibility, loyalty, and the consequences of enabling destructive behavior.
