Massive Attack’s First Australian Tour in 16 Years

Massive Attack Makes a Long-Awaited Return to Australia

After a long hiatus, the legendary British electronic group Massive Attack is set to make a triumphant return to Australia. The band will perform three major shows in August, marking their first appearances in the country in 16 years. Fans across Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne can look forward to an unforgettable experience as the group takes the stage for a series of highly anticipated concerts.

The announcement comes on the heels of Massive Attack’s recent European tour, where they were joined by notable collaborators such as Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser and Jamaican singer Horace Andy. Together, they performed hits like ‘Teardrop’ and ‘Black Milk’, showcasing the band’s signature blend of emotive and genre-defying music.

Since the late 1980s, Massive Attack has been a defining force in the world of electronic music. Hailing from Bristol, the collective has consistently pushed boundaries, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply personal. While often associated with the rise of trip hop, the band has always resisted being confined to a single genre. Their unique approach to blending different musical styles has inspired generations of artists, from established bands to bedroom producers.

Tracks like ‘Unfinished Sympathy’, ‘Teardrop’, and ‘Protection’ are considered masterpieces in the realm of modern electronic music. Each of their productions carries a distinct soul, making it difficult to categorise their work. Despite their immense influence, Massive Attack continues to release new material at a pace that sometimes leaves fans waiting longer than desired.

In early 2024, the band released the single ‘Boots On The Ground’ featuring the acclaimed Tom Waits. This collaboration highlights their ongoing commitment to exploring new creative avenues. Additionally, Robert del Naja’s 2020 EP Eutopia showcased the band’s strong social and political convictions, with track titles such as #CLIMATEEMERGENCY, #TAXHAVENS, and #UNIVERSALBASICINCOME reflecting their values.

Massive Attack’s dedication to their beliefs is a core part of their identity. Recently, the band has gained attention for their environmentally conscious approach to touring. Del Naja once shared his thoughts on the pressures of creativity during an interview with triple j in 1998:

“The most pressure is creative and the pressure between each other, it’s more dominant than anything you read from the outside or get from the outside,” he said. “You’ve got to make sure you’re doing it because you believe it, not because you want to be different. There’s a big difference. You have to believe in what you’re doing. Not just because you’ve been told you need to be influential so therefore you’ve got to keep being an innovator. There has to be something of yourself in there, there’s got to be something real.”

Upcoming Shows

Fans can mark their calendars for the following dates:

  • Thursday, 6 August — Brisbane Entertainment Centre
  • Sunday, 9 August — Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney
  • Tuesday, 11 August — Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

Tickets for these highly anticipated performances will go on sale from Friday, 5 June, at 3pm local time. With their reputation for delivering powerful and thought-provoking performances, Massive Attack’s return to Australia is sure to be a highlight of the year for music lovers across the country.
