A Night of Chaos and Charitable Spirit at Soccer Aid
Soccer Aid, the annual charity football match that brings together sports stars and celebrities for a good cause, recently witnessed an unexpected twist when two Hollywood icons made surprise appearances. The event, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, has long been a platform for raising vital funds for Unicef, with teams representing England and the World XI battling it out on the pitch.
Tom Hanks, best known for his role as Woody in Toy Story, and Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, were in the UK to promote the latest installment of the franchise, Toy Story 5. Their visit to the London Stadium added an extra layer of excitement to the already high-energy event.
Despite not being there for a game, ITV seized the opportunity to feature the actors in a segment with podcaster and influencer GK Barry. The interview, however, quickly turned into a chaotic and humorous affair. As the pair sat in the tunnel, it was clear they weren’t entirely sure what was happening, but they tried their best to appear engaged.
The segment saw Paddy McGuinness lean in for a quick selfie with Hanks, while Danny Dyer boldly rubbed his head. Hanks and Allen also had a brief moment of confusion about the rules of the game, with Hanks correcting Allen by stating, “You cannot use your hands.” GK then took to the pitch, continuing the conversation.
As the interview continued, GK asked the actors which celebrities they were excited to see play. Hanks mentioned Robbie Williams, the founder of Soccer Aid, who was coaching rather than playing. When Allen asked if he meant the singer, Hanks confirmed, leading to a brief exchange before the actor joked about Elton John being involved.
GK helped clarify the line-up, listing names like Tom Hiddleston and Wayne Rooney, England’s captain, which kept the conversation going. Hanks praised Rooney, calling him a legend, while Allen admitted he found the player a bit intimidating. The interview ended with Allen asking GK’s name, prompting a sarcastic response from her.
The segment sparked mixed reactions from fans on social media, with many finding the interaction amusing. Some joked that the actors seemed confused, while others praised GK for keeping her composure. One user even noted that the scene felt like a “weird fever dream.”
Despite the initial confusion, Hanks and Allen appeared more at ease during their next appearance, where they brought out the match ball to roaring cheers. Allen exclaimed, “Whoa! That is a crowd!” while Hanks comically slicked back his hair using the trophy as a mirror.
After fist-bumping some of the kids on the pitch, the duo made their way to presenters Alex Scott and Dermot O’Leary. Hanks expressed his delight, saying, “What a lovely, intimate way to spend a Sunday afternoon! All of my best friends are here.” Allen then read out the fundraising total, which had already exceeded £4 million, ending with a playful shout of “To infinity and beyond!”
Fans praised the actors for their contributions, with one user calling them “legends” and another referring to them as “Disney royalty.” The event also welcomed several returning faces for 2026, including Tom Grennan, Sam Thompson, and Alex Brooker, alongside newcomers such as Richard Gadd and Owen Cooper, the youngest-ever Soccer Aid player at 16.
Other celebrities participating included Maisie Adam, Chloe Burrows, Jordan North, Damson Idris, Olly Murs, and Joe Marler, while Harry Redknapp and Bradley Walsh served as part of the management team. Professional footballers like Jermain Defoe, Jen Beattie, and Dimitar Berbatov also joined the action.
Robbie Williams, an Unicef ambassador and pop icon, performed during the half-time show, celebrating two decades of the event. Since its inception in 2006, Soccer Aid has raised over £121 million, supporting critical initiatives such as clean water, vaccinations, and education for children worldwide.
