Socceroos World Cup Squad Selection Sparks Mixed Reactions
The Australian men’s national football team, the Socceroos, has finalised their 26-man squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, marking a significant moment in the country’s football history. However, this decision has not been without its challenges, particularly for players who had high hopes of making the cut.
Martin Boyle, a key figure in the team, was among those left out. The 33-year-old winger, known for his contributions to the Socceroos over the years, missed the opportunity to play in the World Cup after being excluded from the final squad. Boyle, who previously missed the 2022 World Cup due to injury, was one of four players cut from the initial 30-man train-on squad. Alongside him were goalkeeper Joe Gauci, defender Kye Rowles, and forward Brandon Borello.

Despite the disappointment, coach Tony Popovic acknowledged Boyle’s role in the team’s journey. “He knows he’s played an important role in getting here,” Popovic said when asked about Boyle’s reaction to the news. He also noted that such decisions are never easy, highlighting the emotional aspect of selecting players for the World Cup.
Popovic explained that the selection process involved several factors, including the inclusion of players who had little to do with the qualification campaign. This included uncapped attacking talents like Cristian Volpato and Tete Yengi, both of whom were named in the final squad. Volpato, who recently switched his international allegiance from Italy to Australia, and Yengi, a Japan-based striker, were not part of the match-day squad for the recent friendly against Mexico.
Boyle, however, was on the bench during the game, which could have been an early indication of the difficult news that followed. His performance in 41 appearances for the Socceroos, where he scored 10 goals, speaks volumes about his contributions to the team.

Popovic expressed his appreciation for the players who were not selected, stating that they are “wonderful young men” who have played a part in the team’s journey. He also mentioned the importance of keeping the door open for all players, even if it means some may miss out on the World Cup.
“The range of factors that went into selecting this final World Cup squad includes giving opportunities to many players at different times,” Popovic said. He highlighted the inclusion of players like Tete Yengi, Cristian Volpato, and others such as Lucas Herrington and Awer Mabil.
As the Socceroos prepare for the World Cup, they have another warm-up match against Switzerland in San Diego before facing Turkiye in Vancouver on June 14 (AEST). Popovic emphasized the importance of ensuring that all players are fit and ready for the challenges ahead.
“We want to give more players minutes in this game to have everyone with some match time before we play Turkiye,” Popovic said. “But we’ll see how everyone trains and how the fitness levels are.”
He added that the team is looking for a balance between youth and experience, aiming to build a strong foundation for future competitions.
