Anthony Joshua Swears to Be ‘Good Soldier’ for Friends’ Parents in Tragedy

A New Purpose in the Ring

Anthony Joshua is channeling his determination to become a three-time world heavyweight champion into something far greater than personal glory. His focus now is on honoring the memory of two close friends who lost their lives in a tragic car accident in December. The loss has deeply affected the 36-year-old boxer, but it has also given him a renewed sense of purpose.

Joshua’s next fight will take place in Jeddah on July 25 against Kristian Prenga, an opponent with little recognition in the boxing world. This bout marks his first appearance since surviving a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Both men were not only members of Joshua’s team but also longtime friends. Their passing left the boxer shaken, and for a time, it was uncertain whether he would continue his career.

However, Joshua has found strength in his commitment to the families of Ghami and Ayodele. He has described his mission as being “bigger than me,” emphasizing that his focus is now on supporting their parents. Speaking to the media for the first time since the crash, he said:

“I have to put my emotions to the side because I focus on the parents. My emotions can come at a later stage, but I really look at their parents and I understand it must be most difficult for them. So I don’t make it about me, I make it about them. I make it about the mums and the dads of the two boys.”

For Joshua, boxing is more than just competition—it is a source of purpose and healing. He has described how the sport offers therapeutic value, giving fighters a sense of direction and meaning beyond the ring.

A New Alliance and a Bigger Goal

In the wake of the tragedy, Joshua has formed an unexpected alliance with Oleksandr Usyk, the Ukrainian boxer who defeated him in two previous fights. The rivals have been training together in Valencia, and this partnership has brought new insights and motivation to Joshua’s career.

Usyk has encouraged Joshua to aim for the title of undisputed champion, a goal that initially seemed daunting. But after considering Usyk’s words, Joshua has embraced the challenge with renewed confidence.

“I had to take time to think about that and at first I was like, ‘F** hell!’ But I get it. Why not? I can, I can. He sees it, I know I can do it, so let’s just f**** go for it,” Joshua said.

He has outlined a clear roadmap to achieve this goal, stating: “That’s the goal, how do we get there? Don’t just say it, lay out the roadmap. Give me work. You tell me what to do, I’ll do it. So that’s the roadmap – undisputed champion.”

Joshua views his upcoming fight on July 25 as a step toward reclaiming his place at the top of the sport. While he acknowledges the challenges ahead, he remains confident in his ability to overcome them.

A Future Filled with Possibility

The next major milestone in Joshua’s career is expected to be a showdown with Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium. Although the details of the fight have yet to be finalized, this bout would mark the end of his current deal with Saudi Arabia’s boxing powerbroker, Turki Alalshikh. Joshua plans to continue competing for at least three more years, with the ultimate goal of securing his legacy as one of the greatest in the sport.

As he moves forward, Joshua remains focused on the bigger picture—honoring the memories of those he has lost while striving to achieve greatness in the ring. His journey is not just about winning titles, but about carrying the weight of responsibility and finding strength in the support of those who believe in him.
