Did Broncos Underestimate the Dragons?

A Historic Win for the St George Illawarra Dragons

The St George Illawarra Dragons have finally ended their long winless streak, securing a remarkable 30-26 victory over the Brisbane Broncos in front of their home fans. This win marks the team’s first of the season and has reignited hope for the joint venture after a 15-game losing run that started last year.

From the very beginning, the Dragons showed they were ready to fight. Valentine Homes delivered a standout performance that earned him the player of the match award. His efforts helped the Red V take control of the game early on, leaving the Broncos struggling to find their rhythm.

Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire admitted that his team may have underestimated the Dragons heading into the match. He said the Broncos were “blown off the park” for most of the game before managing to score a few consolation tries.

“The way that the game panned out, well, that’s definitely how it looked, wasn’t it?” Maguire said when asked if the Dragons were taken lightly.

He pointed out that the team failed to meet the high standards they usually set in key areas of the game.

“Obviously that’s something there that we as a group, myself, everyone, need to find out really quickly,” he added.

Despite a tough injury situation in 2026, the Broncos have lost their past four games, which puts their title defense in jeopardy and increases the chances of missing the finals.

“There is a talented team there and we all know that,” Maguire said. “So my role now with the senior leaders and everyone involved [is] to find it.”

Maguire made a strategic move during the second half by stepping down from the coaches’ box to be closer to the action. He felt the team was “flat” and wanted to get a better sense of what was happening on the field.

“I haven’t done that very often in my career, but I just felt for whatever reason we were flat, and I wanted to get down and get the feeling of what was going on there, so obviously I can feel what’s going on with the team,” he explained.

He also mentioned that the team missed an important opportunity in the opening stages, allowing the Dragons to build a 14-0 lead by the 21st minute.

“You can sort of see the players were fighting towards the end, but at the end of the day you’ve got to do that at the start of the game. So that’s the most important part.”

Looking ahead, the Broncos will face the Gold Coast Titans this Saturday. Meanwhile, the Dragons will take on the Cronulla Sharks in their local derby on Sunday.
