Newcastle United Target Marco Palestra Amid Defensive Rebuilding
Newcastle United have identified Atalanta’s right-back Marco Palestra as a key summer target, but the club faces increasing competition for the 21-year-old Italian international. Palestra has just completed an impressive season on loan at Serie A rivals Cagliari, where he made a significant impact and earned praise from fans and coaches alike. His performances have drawn attention from multiple top-tier clubs, with Atalanta reportedly open to selling him if the right offer comes in.
The move to secure a replacement for Tino Livramento is part of Newcastle’s broader strategy to strengthen their defense ahead of the next season. The 23-year-old full-back has two years remaining on his contract, and while interest from Arsenal and Manchester City was initially strong, City’s involvement is now said to have cooled. This has placed pressure on the club to decide whether to retain Livramento or explore other options.

In addition to Livramento, Newcastle have also lost Kieran Trippier, whose contract was allowed to expire. Trippier has since signed with Wolves, leaving a gap in the defense that the club is keen to fill. While Palestra is not the only name on their radar, he is considered one of the most promising options available in the market.
Palestra himself is aware of the growing interest in his future and has expressed confidence in his readiness for the next stage of his career. Speaking from Italy’s training camp ahead of upcoming friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece, he emphasized his commitment to improving and achieving higher goals.
“I’ve always felt ready,” Palestra said. “I want to thank Cagliari and the coach Pisacane for my first season as a starter in Serie A. Now I’m focused on these two games and starting over with Italy. For next season, I hope to grow and improve even more, to fight for even higher goals.”
Several top European clubs have shown interest in Palestra, including Manchester City, Arsenal, and Inter Milan. Liverpool have also been linked with the player, though they are currently focusing on other transfer priorities. Inter Milan, however, are reportedly preparing a substantial offer for Denzel Dumfries, which could complicate matters for Newcastle if they wish to sign Palestra.
Despite the challenges, Newcastle remain committed to pursuing the player, understanding that without Champions League football, attracting top talent may be more difficult. However, Palestra is seen as a high-priority target, and the club is working to build a compelling case for his potential move.
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds. Whether Palestra ultimately moves to Newcastle or another club, his performances this season have already marked him as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe.
