The hidden gem every Australian should watch

Clint Eastwood, who has officially retired from the film industry, has directed and starred in an impressive 80 movies. Throughout his career, he has created a diverse filmography that includes several hidden gems. While many of his films are well-known, such as Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy, including The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, crime drama Dirty Harry, revisionist western Unforgiven, and boxing weepie Million Dollar Baby, one lesser-known film that stands out is White Hunter, Black Heart.

The film, released in 1990, was not a commercial success at the time, grossing only $2 million (£1.4 million) from a $24 million (£17.8 million) budget. However, over the years, it has gained a cult following and is often regarded as one of Eastwood’s finest works before he won an Oscar for Unforgiven just two years later.

Before White Hunter, Black Heart, Eastwood’s directorial efforts included crime dramas like Play Misty for Me (1971) and Sudden Impact (1986), as well as several westerns such as High Plains Drifter (1973), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Heartbreak Ridge (1986). However, the late 1980s marked a shift in his filmmaking style, as he ventured into different genres. This period saw him directing a biopic of saxophonist Charlie Parker titled Bird (1988) and also working on White Hunter, Black Heart.

White Hunter, Black Heart is an adventure drama that follows the story of film director John Wilson, who becomes increasingly erratic while making a film on location in Africa. The film is based on Peter Viertel’s 1953 book of the same name, which is a thinly disguised account of his experiences working on the 1951 film The African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.

Eastwood’s character in White Hunter, Black Heart is inspired by The African Queen’s director, John Huston. It is believed that Huston spent much of the film’s grueling shoot in the Congo and Uganda, drinking whiskey and hunting big game. In White Hunter, Black Heart, Wilson is shown to become obsessed with tracking down a particular elephant, causing frustration among the cast and crew.

The script for White Hunter, Black Heart was co-written by Peter Viertel, James Bridges (known for The China Syndrome), and Burt Kennedy, who wrote Ride Lonesome and Comanche Station—westerns directed by Budd Boetticher in 1959 and 1960, respectively.

Eastwood is one of the most successful actors-turned-directors, known for his efficient and quick-speed directorial style, often finishing projects ahead of schedule and under budget. His son, Kyle Eastwood, a composer who has scored several of his father’s films, confirmed Clint’s retirement earlier this month.

At a gig in November, Kyle shared a video online where he said: “I have many fond memories of working with him. Now, he’s retired, he’s 95 years old. But I was very lucky to be able to work with him on quite a few films. It was a great experience for me.”

Eastwood’s last film as a director was the 2024 legal thriller Juror No 2, while his final screen appearance was in the 2021 western thriller Cry Macho.
