ASX Health Sector Plummets 9.15% as Nasdaq Biotech Rises, Spotlight on Winners

ASX Healthcare Sector Faces Sharp Decline in May

The S&P/ASX Healthcare Index experienced a significant drop of 9.15% in May, marking it as the worst-performing sector for the month and year-to-date on the local bourse. While the Nasdaq Biotech Index quietly climbed 2.2% during the same period, the Australian healthcare sector struggled with internal challenges. This downturn has opened up opportunities for stock pickers who are looking to capitalize on undervalued assets.

Several smaller healthcare companies saw notable gains in May, including Mach7, Artrya, and Vitrafy. These stocks showed resilience despite the broader sector’s struggles. The performance of these names highlights the potential for growth within the healthcare space, even amid market volatility.

Key Players in the Sector

The sector’s major players, such as CSL (ASX:CSL) and Cochlear (ASX:COH), faced significant declines. CSL, a leading blood products and vaccine company, suffered from another profit downgrade, while Cochlear continued to show little recovery after a 44% fall in April due to its own profit warning.

Tim Boreham of noted that the big four stocks of the ASX healthcare sector—CSL, Cochlear, ResMed (ASX:RMD), and ProMedicus (ASX:PME)—lost 12% in May, erasing $15 billion in market cap. These stocks are at their lowest point in eight years, reflecting the sector’s challenges.

Home-Grown Weakness Offers Opportunities

Morgans healthcare analyst Iain Wilkie pointed out that the ASX healthcare sector’s weakness is largely home-grown rather than a global issue. He attributed this to the concentration of the index on a few mega-caps. When these major players stumble, the entire sector feels the impact.

Wilkie explained that stripping out company-specific issues, much of the sector’s decline is due to multiple compression as global money rotates away from expensive defensive growth stocks. He emphasized that the sector is now at an eight-year low and trading well below its long-run premium to the broader market, suggesting that this could be an opportune time for investors to look for quality names.

Selective Investment Opportunities

Wilkie highlighted that the current situation presents opportunities for selective investment. He favored businesses where the structural growth story remains intact, and the de-rating is due to sentiment rather than fundamentals. ProMedicus, for example, is in a sweet spot despite being expensive by conventional standards. The share price has halved over the past year, but fundamentals continue to improve.

Vitrafy Life Sciences (ASX:VFY) increased by 18% after receiving validation from the US Army for its cryopreservation ecosystem. This development positions Vitrafy as a genuine solution for a category gap in the US market.

Neuren Pharmaceuticals (ASX:NEU) rose 17%, reflecting a classic case of bad news being priced in and good news surprising. The company’s US partner, Acadia Pharmaceuticals, has shown strong sales growth, which is expected to positively impact Neuren’s royalty income.
