The production relied on far more practical sets and locations than before, helping bring iconic places like Ba Sing Se to life with greater detail and authenticity. The creative team also highlighted a major focus on what executive producer Christine Boylan described as “Fire Nation succession,” a storyline that explores the growing rivalry between Prince Zuko and Princess Azula as both seek to secure their place in Fire Lord Ozai’s legacy.
“You just never know,” Elizabeth Yu (Fire Nation Princess Azula) told Entertainment Weekly. “Sometimes a show could be huge and there just isn’t a place for it to get to see the story through,” she continued.
Character Growth and New Additions
The cast also discussed the growth of their characters following the time jump between seasons. Gordon Cormier’s Aang returns more experienced in waterbending, while Kiawentiio’s Katara has developed into a stronger healer and mentor. Meanwhile, fan-favorite earthbender Toph Beifong makes her long-awaited debut, portrayed by Miyako, who underwent extensive preparation for the role. Producers described Toph as a fearless truth-teller whose arrival adds a fresh dynamic to Team Avatar.
