Dr. Samira Mohan will not be returning to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center when the third season of The Pitt begins. Over the past two seasons, Supriya Ganesh’s character, Dr. Mohan, became one of the show’s most empathetic and grounded voices. She faced burnout, grueling shifts, and the intense pressure of working under Dr. Robby. Now, as Season 3 approaches, Ganesh has finally spoken about the creative decision that led to Dr. Mohan’s departure from the series.
So what did Ganesh have to say about Dr. Mohan’s unexpected exit from The Pitt?
Producers made the final call on Dr. Mohan’s exit
In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Ganesh reflected on how the show explored workplace dynamics and representation. She admitted that many of the themes resonated deeply with her own experiences. She also referenced the entertainment industry’s long-standing “boys’ club” culture, explaining why storylines involving Dr. Robby and Dr. Langdon felt authentic to perform.
However, when it came to Dr. Mohan’s departure, Ganesh made it clear that the decision was not hers. She revealed that executive producers R. Scott Gemmill, Noah Wyle, and John Wells were the ones who chose to write the character out of the series.
“They work with such intention on the show and make all the choices that they make for that reason, so I think it’s better to ask them for answers,” Ganesh said.
Despite her departure, Ganesh spoke warmly about her time on the series and the support she has received from fans. “I’m going to treasure all the memories I had working with these two and everyone else,” she shared, admitting that she also feels sad for fans who won’t get to follow Dr. Mohan’s journey anymore.
Her co-star, Isa Briones, praised the character’s impact on representation and recalled messages from viewers who finally felt seen on screen.
The Pitt Season 3 will pick up just four months later
The Pitt is expected to return in early January 2027, with production officially starting in June 2026 after the writers’ room opened in March. Unlike the nearly year-long gap between previous seasons, Season 3 jumps ahead just four months, moving the action from Season 2’s intense Fourth of July shift to early November.
The colder setting will introduce new emergency challenges, including snow, black ice, and a fresh influx of seasonal trauma cases at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.
While familiar faces like Noah Wyle, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Isa Briones, Fiona Dourif, Gerran Howell, Shabana Azeez, and others are set to return, Dr. Mohan’s absence will leave a noticeable void inside the emergency department.
New focus on Dr. Robby and Dr. Parker Ellis
The new season will largely focus on Dr. Robby’s return from a months-long sabbatical as he attempts to rebuild strained relationships and confront the emotional fallout of his past actions. Meanwhile, night-shift senior resident Dr. Parker Ellis, played by Ayesha Harris, has earned a promotion to series regular status as PTMC prepares for another demanding year.
Although Dr. Mohan won’t be walking back through the doors of PTMC, her impact on both the emergency department and The Pitt’s audience is set to linger long after her final shift.
What’s next for The Pitt?
As the third season of The Pitt approaches, fans are eager to see how the show will continue to evolve. With new challenges, fresh storylines, and a cast of familiar and new characters, the series is poised to deliver another season of intense drama and emotional depth.
