Latrell Mitchell’s Injury Worse Than Reported, Three-Month Recovery Feared

Latrell Mitchell’s Injury Raises Concerns Among Experts

Leading commentator Adam Peacock has raised concerns about the severity of Latrell Mitchell’s injury, suggesting it may be more serious than what South Sydney Rabbitohs are publicly acknowledging. The issue stems from a bulging disc in Mitchell’s back, which has kept him out of action since Round 11 of the NRL season. However, recent comments from coach Wayne Bennett have added to the uncertainty surrounding the star winger’s recovery.

Bennett revealed on Thursday that Mitchell is experiencing problems with his sciatic nerve, a development that has sparked alarm among fans and analysts alike. While the coach expressed hope that Mitchell could return for Round 17 against Parramatta, he also admitted that the player is still lacking strength in the affected leg. “He’s probably two or three weeks away from playing,” Bennett said. “The sciatic nerve is playing up on him a fair bit, and he hasn’t got the strength in that leg. It’s slowly coming back but it’s just not there yet.”

During a discussion on SEN radio, Peacock emphasized that the mention of the sciatic nerve is a significant red flag. He pointed to the case of Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson, who recently underwent surgery to ‘shave’ a bulging disc that was pressing on his sciatic nerve. This comparison highlights the potential seriousness of Mitchell’s condition.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body, extending from the lower back through the buttocks and splitting into two branches that travel down both legs. When a bulging disc compresses this nerve, it can lead to severe pain and affect sensation in the legs. Peacock described the situation as particularly concerning, noting that if one of Mitchell’s discs is “smashing into his sciatic nerve,” it could cause significant discomfort and hinder his ability to play.

“It causes all this referred pain – down to your foot sometimes – you ain’t playing rugby league with that,” Peacock said, drawing from his own experience of dealing with similar pain.

Potential for a Long Recovery

Peacock also addressed the possibility of Mitchell requiring surgery, estimating that a rugby league player might be able to return in three months with daily treatment and rehabilitation. However, he warned that if the disc is indeed causing ongoing pressure on the sciatic nerve, Mitchell may not be ready for the State of Origin series.

“The State of Origin 3 is three days after the end of Round 18, and if that disc is just ploughing into the sciatic nerve, which it sounds like it is, [he won’t be playing anytime soon],” Peacock said.

This concern is further compounded by the fact that Mitchell experienced a similar back issue last season. He only managed to play once in the final 10 weeks of the 2025 season, raising questions about his long-term availability.

If Peacock’s prediction proves accurate and Mitchell misses three months, he will face a tough challenge in returning before the finals. With just 14 rounds remaining in the regular season, the timing would be critical for both the player and the team.

What’s Next?

As the situation develops, fans and analysts will be closely watching how Mitchell responds to treatment and whether any updates come from the Rabbitohs. For now, the focus remains on ensuring his health and well-being, as the club and coaching staff work to determine the best path forward for the star player.
