India faces Afghanistan in three-match T20I series in New Delhi

Potential Bilateral T20I Series Between India and Afghanistan

A significant bilateral cricket series might be on the horizon, with the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) reportedly reaching out to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to arrange three T20 Internationals. This could mark a historic moment as Afghanistan has never officially hosted India in a bilateral setup before. However, due to the ongoing political and security challenges within Afghanistan, the ACB is proposing that the matches take place in New Delhi.

Tentative Schedule and Historical Context

The India vs Afghanistan T20I schedule is currently tentative, but it’s expected that the teams will face off in September if all goes according to plan. This would be a notable event, as India’s first major assignment after the IPL 2026 is likely to be against Afghanistan. Despite having played each other in various ICC competitions and bilateral encounters over the years, Afghanistan has never hosted India in an official capacity.

For over a decade, Afghanistan has had to conduct its home matches outside the country due to unstable political and security conditions. During this time, India has been a key supporter of Afghan cricket, with venues like Greater Noida and Dehradun serving as temporary home grounds for the national team. In 2017, Afghanistan played Ireland in Greater Noida, and in 2018, they moved a T20I match against Bangladesh to Dehradun. Later, many of their home fixtures were held in the UAE, particularly in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

More recently, Afghanistan attempted to host a Test match in India, but it was called off due to poor pitch conditions. The one-off Test against New Zealand in Greater Noida in September 2024 was canceled before any play could take place because of rain affecting the outfield.

New Temporary Base for Afghanistan

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is now likely to become Afghanistan’s new temporary base as they prepare to host one of the top teams in world cricket. India has been quietly strengthening its cricketing relationships by agreeing to bilateral series with multiple Full Member and Associate nations, which helps smaller boards generate revenue, even if not substantial.

Strategic Timing and Calendar Challenges

This planned Afghanistan series is particularly interesting due to its timing. Reports suggest that the schedule has already been shared with India’s selection committee, and the BCCI is facing a unique calendar challenge later in the year. The three-match T20I series against Afghanistan is expected to conclude on September 19, just as the Indian squad begins preparing for the Asian Games.

Cricket at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, starts on September 23, and India enters the competition as the defending gold medalist. This makes the timing of the series crucial for the team’s preparation.

Packed September-October Schedule

India’s schedule for September and October is extremely busy, which may lead the BCCI to announce two slightly different squads. One side, consisting of younger players and fringe internationals, could participate in the Asian Games. Meanwhile, the senior squad is expected to remain in India for the home season, starting with the Afghanistan series and followed by a tour against the West Indies.

Afghanistan Tour of India Schedule

The exact details of the Afghanistan tour of India are yet to be finalized, but the potential for a high-profile T20I series between the two nations is clear. With both teams eager to strengthen their cricketing ties, this series could set the stage for future collaborations and competitive matches.
