Farmer’s Famous Beard: A Deal-Breaker for the Small Screen
When it comes to reality television, sometimes the most talked-about features aren’t the dramatic relationships or the picturesque country settings, but rather a farmer’s impressive facial hair. For Jason, a 37-year-old dairy farmer from Queensland, his substantial beard was a significant part of his on-screen persona during his stint on Farmer Wants A Wife. However, it turns out this iconic beard was almost sacrificed for the sake of television.
Jason recently revealed that before filming commenced for the popular dating show, he was presented with a rather unexpected request: would he consider shaving off his beard? His response was a firm and unequivocal “no.”
“They actually asked me would I shave it off for the show, and I told them, ‘A big no,’” Jason shared. The producers, he explained, believed that potential partners would be curious about what lay beneath the thick growth. “They reckon women want to see what’s under the beard.”
While the beard was a non-negotiable for Jason, his hairstyle did undergo a transformation. He admitted to sporting a bit of a mullet, which the show’s production team insisted he cut. It was a compromise; they allowed him to keep his beloved beard in exchange for a tidier hairdo. “I did have a bit of a mullet happening, but they made me cut it off. They compromised. They said, ‘We’ll let you keep the beard, but the mullet’s got to go.’ It’s grown back a bit now.”

The beard itself is no fleeting trend for Jason. He’s been sporting it for over a decade. His journey to a full beard began somewhat unconventionally in his late teens. “I had a couple of shaves when I was 18,” he explained. “I didn’t like shaving, so I just grew stubble and had stubble for a long time, and I thought, ‘Oh, I’m just going to grow the beard and see what it looks like.’” What started as a dislike for the daily chore of shaving eventually blossomed into a signature look that has endured for more than 12 years.
The Farmer’s Quest for Love: Beyond the Beard
Beyond his notable facial hair, Jason is a devoted father of two and runs a dairy farm in Coolabunia, a rural locality near Kingaroy in Queensland. His participation in Farmer Wants A Wife wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision; he had been hoping to join the show for a few years. He admitted that his previous attempts at finding love through dating apps had proven challenging, particularly when it came to finding women willing to relocate to his farm.
“I ask questions early on, like, ‘If we were to hit it off, would you be able to move in the future?’” Jason stated. He understands that such a significant life change takes time and doesn’t expect immediate commitment. “I don’t expect someone to move in two months but maybe after a year.” He also highlighted the particular difficulties he’s faced when dating single mothers. “It’s been tough dating single mums because they generally have custody orders in place and they can’t move for custody reasons,” he explained, underscoring the complex personal circumstances that can impact relationships in rural settings.

Speed Dating Surprises and a Missing Lady
Jason’s journey on Farmer Wants A Wife kicked off with the initial speed dating rounds. Interestingly, he was presented with seven potential partners, one less than the eight women offered to the other participating farmers. This led to a natural question: where was his eighth lady?
“From what I heard, she was unwell the night before or something, so I think she made it down there and then something happened,” Jason recounted, offering a brief explanation for the slight disparity in his initial selection pool.
Ultimately, the hope is that Jason finds a partner who not only appreciates his down-to-earth nature and his commitment to his farm but also embraces him – beard and all.
