Newcastle star eyes big move to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur Eyes Major Midfield Addition

Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly considering one of the most significant moves of the summer transfer window, with Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali showing interest in joining the north London club. According to reports, the Italian international is open to a move to Roberto De Zerbi’s side as Spurs continue their rebuilding efforts following two consecutive 17th-place finishes in the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano has highlighted that Tonali has become one of De Zerbi’s top midfield targets. The 26-year-old, who currently plays for Newcastle, has three years remaining on his contract, with an option for an additional year. He joined the Magpies from AC Milan in 2023 for a fee of £55 million and has since made 110 appearances, scoring ten goals.

Despite serving a 10-month suspension for breaches of the FA’s betting regulations between October 2023 and August 2024, Tonali quickly became a fan favorite at St James’ Park. Since returning, he has contributed to Newcastle’s success, including winning the Carabao Cup and competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Competition for Tonali’s Signature

Tottenham is not the only club interested in signing Tonali. Manchester City, Arsenal, and Manchester United are also monitoring the situation. However, according to David Ornstein, the main challenge for Spurs may be agreeing a fee with Newcastle rather than convincing the player to make the switch.

Ornstein also mentioned that there has been no official contact between Tottenham and Newcastle so far. Nevertheless, the North London club sees Tonali as a potential statement signing, with De Zerbi personally keen to strengthen his midfield ahead of the new season.

Tonali’s Career Overview

Tonali began his career in the Brescia academy before moving to AC Milan in 2020. He made 130 appearances for the Rossoneri before joining Newcastle in the summer of 2023. During the 2025/26 campaign, he featured 53 times across all competitions, contributing ten goal involvements while playing primarily as a defensive midfielder.

Internationally, Tonali has earned 32 caps for Italy and is a regular member of the national team. His performances have drawn attention from several top clubs, with Romano noting that Tonali prefers to remain in England, making a Premier League move the most likely outcome if he leaves Newcastle this summer.

Tottenham’s Midfield Needs

Midfield has been a key area of focus for Tottenham in recent transfer windows. The club has brought in players such as Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, João Palhinha, and Conor Gallagher since 2024 to strengthen their central midfield. However, Yves Bissouma has already left the club this summer, and Palhinha’s loan from Bayern Munich has ended without a decision on a permanent move.

This leaves Tottenham in need of further midfield reinforcement, with Romano reporting that De Zerbi views Tonali as one of his top priorities to lead the club’s rebuild. A successful deal would signal a strong statement from the ownership and significantly bolster a midfield that has seen considerable changes in recent seasons.

Interest From Other Clubs

Manchester City is also monitoring the situation, with Romano suggesting they could target Tonali if they fail to secure a move for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Arsenal remains interested, while Manchester United has long admired the Italian midfielder. However, none of these clubs are currently considered as advanced as Tottenham in their pursuit.

If Tottenham can convince Newcastle to sell, the move would represent a major step forward in their rebuilding process. It would also mark a significant investment in a player who has proven himself at the highest level and is eager for a new challenge.
