Kazuo Ishiguro returns with new novel after five years

New Novel by Kazuo Ishiguro Set for 2027 Release

Kazuo Ishiguro, the acclaimed author of Never Let Me Go and Klara and the Sun, has announced his first new novel since the 2021 release of Klara and the Sun. The upcoming book, titled Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger, will be published worldwide in March 2027 by Faber. This announcement comes as a thrilling update for fans of Ishiguro’s work, especially those who have followed his critically acclaimed novels.

The novel is set in London during 1938, just one year before the outbreak of World War II. It centers around an intriguing encounter between the enigmatic title character, Miss Lambert, and a music hall enthusiast. Fans of Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day will find familiar ground in this setting, which reflects the historical and cultural backdrop that has often inspired his storytelling.

Faber describes the novel as “exquisite entertainment in which nothing is quite as it seems.” The publisher highlights the unique blend of mystery and charm that readers can expect from this new work. Angus Cargill, Faber’s publishing director and Ishiguro’s editor, expressed excitement about the novel, noting that it draws on Ishiguro’s passion for music, art, and Golden Age cinema. He described it as a “disarming and memorable caper” that offers a fresh twist to the author’s already rich body of work.

Jordan Pavlin, editor-in-chief at Knopf, Ishiguro’s US publisher, added that the novel brings a sense of joy and vibrancy to its characters. He praised the innate goodness and heroism of the characters, describing their actions as “irresistible” and their innocence as something that “literally has them bursting into song.” Pavlin concluded by challenging readers to resist the charms of Miss Lambert.

Ishiguro was born in Japan in 1954 and moved to the UK when he was five years old. His literary career has spanned decades, with his works translated into over 50 languages and sold in millions of copies globally. The 72-year-old author has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Booker Prize for The Remains of the Day, his 1989 novel.

Several of Ishiguro’s novels have been adapted into films and television series. The 1993 adaptation of The Remains of the Day, starring Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins, received eight Oscar nominations. In 2010, Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, and Andrew Garfield starred in a film adaptation of Never Let Me Go, while Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro is currently working on a stop-motion animated adaptation of The Buried Giant, Ishiguro’s 2015 fantasy novel.

Taika Waititi is set to direct a film adaptation of Klara and the Sun, starring Amy Adams and Jenna Ortega. The film is scheduled for release in October.

Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger will be released by Faber on 9 March 2027. Readers can look forward to a compelling narrative that promises to captivate and challenge expectations.
