A-League Women: Phoenix & Victory Secure Vital Victories

Victory Snatch Crucial Win, Phoenix Surge in Premiership Race

Melbourne Victory have reignited their A-League Women finals aspirations with a vital 1-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers. Meanwhile, Wellington Phoenix continue to press their claim for the premiership title after a commanding 3-0 triumph against Brisbane Roar.

For Jeff Hopkins’ Victory side, who are typically considered strong contenders for major silverware, this season has been a tougher battle for a top-six finals berth. Realistically, they needed to secure maximum points from their remaining fixtures to have a shot at post-season action.

The breakthrough for Victory came in the 57th minute, with Holly Furphy’s well-taken goal proving to be the difference on the day. This crucial win ticks off the first of their required victories, while simultaneously extinguishing Western Sydney Wanderers’ own finals hopes, leaving them firmly in 10th place.

Currently sitting in fifth position on the ladder with 25 points, Victory find themselves in a tight race. They trail Melbourne City (30 points), Adelaide United (29), Wellington Phoenix (28), and Canberra United (27). Several teams below them, including Perth (22 points), Central Coast Mariners (22 points), and Brisbane Roar (20 points), still have games in hand, adding further pressure to the standings.

The decisive moment at the Home of the Matildas on Saturday unfolded when Kennedy White was released by a clever pass from Chelsea Blissett. White had an golden opportunity to open the scoring, but her initial shot was straight at Western Sydney goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis. However, the save proved to be only a temporary reprieve. The rebound fell kindly to Furphy, who expertly dispatched a stunning left-foot volley into the back of the net.

Reflecting on the team’s mindset, Furphy shared the key message from coach Hopkins at halftime. “The main message was just ‘treat this like a finals game,’” she told Paramount Plus. “At this point, we do need to win every game and put away those points, so it was really (important) to have that hunger and desire to get that ball in the back of the net, and we did that.”

Phoenix’s Dominance and Fraser’s Return

Earlier in the day at Sky Stadium, Wellington Phoenix showcased their premiership credentials with a convincing performance. Youngster Manaia Elliott opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a well-placed header. Emma Pijnenburg doubled their advantage just six minutes later, putting the Phoenix firmly in control.

The match also marked a significant moment for Wellington’s star recruit, Macey Fraser. Having missed the majority of the season due to personal reasons, Fraser made her highly anticipated return to the Phoenix lineup, coming on at halftime for her first appearance since rejoining the club. Her presence on the field will undoubtedly boost the team’s attacking options as they push for the title.

The Phoenix sealed their dominant victory in the 72nd minute when Makala Woods found the back of the net from close range, effectively burying Brisbane’s hopes of a comeback.

Injury Returns and Goalkeeping Heroics

On the other side of the ledger, Brisbane Roar saw their skipper and Matildas veteran, Tameka Yallop, make her return from a serious hamstring injury. Yallop, whose injury had dashed her Asian Cup aspirations, came off the bench in the 82nd minute, marking a welcome return to the pitch.

The Phoenix’s victory was also underpinned by a spectacular goalkeeping display from Victoria Esson. In the 84th minute, Esson produced an extraordinary point-blank reflex save, leaping and extending a single hand to hook the ball to safety and preserve her team’s clean sheet.

The current round of fixtures will conclude on Sunday, with Melbourne City and Canberra United set to face off.
