Gout’s Silly Celebration Caps Hair-Raising Win

Teen Sprint Sensation Overcomes Flu to Clinch Queensland Double

The Queensland athletics championships recently concluded, and while the results are important, it was the post-race antics of young sprinter Gout Gout that truly captured the spirit of the event. After a nail-biting victory in the open-age 200-metre final on Sunday afternoon, the teenage sensation was seen covering his nose with his fingers and shaking his head, a clear sign of his recent battle with illness. This win marked his second title of the meet, following his triumph in the under-20 100-metre final the previous day.

For Gout, who was reportedly bedridden with the flu as recently as Friday, competing this weekend was far from a straightforward affair. He not only had to contend with the lingering effects of illness but also a challenging headwind of -2.1 metres per second. Despite these obstacles, the 18-year-old managed to secure the open-age 200m crown at the Queensland Sports and Athletic Centre (QSAC) with a time of 20.42 seconds.

The race itself was a tense affair. For a fleeting moment, it seemed as though 21-year-old Rory Easton, a fellow athlete from the Tigers Athletics Club, might pull off a surprise victory. However, Gout dug deep and did just enough to complete the sprint double, crossing the finish line a mere 0.09 seconds ahead of Easton. The relieved sprinter was later seen sharing a warm embrace with his mother, Monica, after leaving the track.

Gout had initially mentioned a sinus issue to reporters on Saturday. However, his symptoms on Sunday – chest and throat congestion, a runny nose, and a cough – painted a clearer picture: he was battling a bout of the flu. When questioned about his unusual post-win gesture, Gout chuckled, explaining, “I guess it was a little silly celebration, knowing that even if I’m sick I can come out and do my thing.” This moment highlighted not only his talent but also his remarkable tenacity.

Building Resilience for Future Challenges

The experience of competing and winning while unwell has, according to Gout, been invaluable for building his resilience. “It definitely builds resilience, especially at [a] state championships,” he stated. “Knowing that if I can do this at a state championships, if I unfortunately get sick at an Olympics or something like that I can back it up and continue running.”

His coach, Di Sheppard, expressed immense pride in her young charge’s performance and character. “He has got some ticker, which is good because that’s what you want,” Sheppard remarked. “That’s what’s going to take you to the top.”

Rory Easton, the runner-up in the 200m final, spoke highly of the opportunity to race against Gout. While acknowledging that an easier win might be appealing, Easton believes that competing against strong opposition is ultimately more beneficial. “Part of you is sort of like, ‘Damn, an easy win would be nice’, but I think it’s better to run against good competition and run fast times,” Easton told Wide World of Sports. “He’s pulling me along to these times. I don’t know if I’d be running these times if he wasn’t there. So it helps.”

Gout’s path to the final included a dominant performance in the semi-finals earlier on Sunday, where he qualified as the fastest with a time of 20.59 seconds, benefiting from a slight tailwind of +0.9 metres per second.

Looking Ahead: Melbourne and Past Rivals

Having successfully completed year 12 at Ipswich Grammar School last year, Gout’s focus now shifts to his next major competition. He is scheduled to compete in the 200m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne on March 28.

In Melbourne, Gout will face a familiar rival in Brisbane sprinter Lachlan Kennedy. Kennedy was the athlete who narrowly defeated Gout in a thrilling 200m race at last year’s Maurie Plant Meet. Notably, Kennedy did not participate in this year’s Queensland championships, setting the stage for an anticipated rematch in Melbourne. This upcoming event will undoubtedly be another significant test for the rising star as he continues his journey in elite athletics.
