From Embarrassment to Empowerment: Cat Byrne’s Inspiring Weight Loss Journey
Two years ago, Cat Byrne from Kidderminster found herself grappling with a profound sense of disappointment and embarrassment. The simple act of playing with her young son was a struggle, largely due to her weight. “I felt really disappointed in myself and embarrassed that I was struggling to do basic things because of my weight,” she recounted. This wasn’t a new battle; Cat had always carried extra weight, but the convergence of COVID-19 lockdowns, a subsequent pregnancy, and the demanding early days of new motherhood saw her weight steadily increase.
However, a powerful motivator emerged in the form of her son. For the initial years after his birth, Cat was driven by a strong desire to be a healthier role model for him as he grew. “For the first few years after having my son I kept telling myself I needed to make healthier choices to be a better role model for him as he grows up,” she explained. This internal resolve, coupled with a structured approach, led to a remarkable transformation.
In January 2024, Cat weighed a significant 23 and a half stone. By the time of her interview, she had shed an astonishing 11 and a half stone. Her journey began with joining a weight loss group. The initial success was rapid; within ten months of joining, she had already lost nine stone. This significant achievement spurred her to set her sights higher and tackle her final weight loss goal by incorporating running into her routine, aiming to boost her overall fitness.
Now, Cat is set to participate in the AJ Bell Great Birmingham Run 10k on Sunday, May 3rd. The most heartwarming aspect of this event is that she will be cheered on by the very person who ignited her transformative journey – her son.
Embracing the Challenge: The Power of Running
Cat’s foray into running was inspired by observing friends and family members who spoke highly of its benefits for both their physical and mental well-being. Initially, her lack of fitness left her feeling self-conscious. To overcome this, she adopted a strategy of running alone during quieter periods, typically at lunchtime, to avoid feeling embarrassed. “I would say I was one of the least active people you’d have ever met before October 2024,” she admitted.
Despite the initial hurdles, Cat remained committed. She diligently maintained a calorie deficit, combined with her running efforts and the addition of weight training. This consistent dedication yielded incredible results. By April 2025, she had achieved a monumental milestone: losing 50% of her initial body weight. This physical transformation was accompanied by a profound sense of renewed vitality and a “whole lot of life.”

A Son’s Influence: The Driving Force Behind the Transformation
Cat’s now five-year-old son is undeniably the cornerstone of her entire weight loss and fitness endeavour. “Oh, he is absolutely my main inspiration,” she stated emphatically. Her vision extends beyond her own personal achievements; she aspires for her son to grow up viewing exercise not as a chore or a form of punishment, but as an enjoyable and positive aspect of life. “I want him to know that exercise isn’t punishment or something we do because we have to, but something we do because we want to,” she explained.
The ability to actively participate and play with her son without physical limitations has brought Cat immense joy. She is now able to inspire him to embrace exercise and foster a sense of pride in what their bodies are capable of achieving.
While Cat has previously completed 5k runs, the Great Birmingham Run 10k represents a significant personal challenge, a tangible way to measure how far she has come. “It keeps me striving to be better for myself and my son,” she said. The thought of her son being at the finish line, witnessing his mother achieve something she has worked so incredibly hard for, is a powerful motivator. “He’ll be at the Great Birmingham Run cheering me on and seeing his mum doing something she’s worked hard to be able to do.”
