Vibrant Aussie Motoring Art: Full of Surprises

For artist Mark Davies, the open road isn’t just for travel; it’s a canvas teeming with inspiration, often featuring the gleaming chrome and roaring engines of classic cars. From the humble, slightly battered Reliant Regal van piloted by Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses to the impossibly sleek Aston Martins synonymous with James Bond, these automotive icons frequently find their way into Davies’s wonderfully surreal and richly detailed digital landscapes. His work masterfully blends a lifelong passion for cinema and compelling storytelling, constructing intricate compositions from thousands of individual digital images. This meticulous layering technique imbues his art with a palpable sense of drama and atmosphere, captivating a dedicated following.

A Lifelong Artistic Journey

Art has been an integral part of Mark Davies’s life since he was a young boy. He recalls being a rather shy child, but the act of painting provided him with a crucial sense of confidence. “My parents were incredibly supportive, and our home garage became my dedicated studio space,” Davies shares. “I was constantly ferrying artwork back and forth from school.”

A pivotal figure in shaping his artistic development was his art teacher, Mr. Donald. Davies points to early influences such as the Renaissance master Piero della Francesca and the iconic Surrealist Salvador Dalí, particularly admiring Dalí’s evocative landscape compositions.

“I loved to paint, but I initially shied away from computers, which unfortunately led to a dip in my confidence,” Davies admits. He eventually pursued a different career path, describing himself as a “bad manager,” but the desire to return to art never truly faded. “With the persistent encouragement of my art teacher, I developed a real aptitude for graphics and landed a role at a design agency. One of our clients was Vauxhall, and that experience really spurred me on to hone my photo-retouching skills.”

From Digital Pixels to Evocative Narratives

As his technical abilities flourished over time, Mark Davies began producing his own prints. “I’ve always possessed a vivid imagination and found immense enjoyment in crafting entire landscapes from a narrative,” he explains. This intrinsic ability is brilliantly showcased in his detailed and diverse artworks, which invite viewers into meticulously constructed worlds.

“My work encompasses a wide array of subjects, all united by a strong sense of nostalgia,” Davies notes. His compositions are frequently inspired by his favourite films, resulting in busy, packed scenes where cars often play a significant role in the unfolding story. “I’m constantly seeking opportunities to weave a classic car into my pieces,” he confesses with a grin.

Cinematic Icons on the Canvas

One recurring cinematic subject in Davies’s portfolio is the iconic DeLorean from Back to the Future. “A collector in Worthing even granted me the incredible experience of a ride in his replica,” he recounts. This particular vehicle has proven to be a popular theme in his prints, and he is currently working on a new composition to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Other beloved film franchises that frequently feature in his art include Ghostbusters, with the instantly recognisable 1959 Cadillac, affectionately known as the ‘Ectomobile,’ often taking centre stage. Looking ahead, Davies has plans to explore the automotive stars of other cinematic classics, such as the 1986 favourite Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and he is particularly eager to feature a replica of the coveted Ferrari 250 GT California.

Automotive Commissions and Personal Passions

Davies has also undertaken notable commissions for automotive brands. For instance, he was recently tasked by the Porsche Centre Cambridge to create a special print to celebrate the grand opening of their new showroom. This striking design showcases twelve of Stuttgart’s finest automotive creations, including the legendary Porsche 356 Speedster, famously owned by Steve McQueen, and the unforgettable Gulf 917 from the epic film Le Mans. “I couldn’t resist the urge to subtly alter the iconic Hollywood sign to read ‘Porsche’,” Davies reveals.

His personal connection with cars extends back to his first vehicle, a Vauxhall Nova SR. “That was my absolute pride and joy,” he remembers, “though the insurance cost more than the car itself!” Fortunately, Davies now owns his dream car, an Audi RS6. “My mother is Belgian, and I’m really looking forward to taking her on a road trip back to her homeland in it,” he says.

One can only imagine the creative sparks that might fly as Davies, at the wheel of his powerful Audi, navigates scenic routes and observes the ebb and flow of traffic. Such journeys could undoubtedly provide a rich wellspring of inspiration for future artworks, blending his love for cars, cinema, and the open road into captivating digital tapestries.
