Euphoria S3: What We Know So Far

Euphoria Season 3: The Long-Awaited Return and What to Expect

Fans of the critically acclaimed HBO drama Euphoria have been on the edge of their seats since the explosive conclusion of Season 2 in early 2022. The anticipation for the third instalment has been palpable, and the wait is finally nearing its end with an official premiere date just weeks away. The beloved cast, including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, and Jacob Elordi, are all set to reprise their complex roles in a season that has been four years in the making. Set to pick up five years after the events of the previous season, Euphoria Season 3 promises to delve deeper into the lives of its characters as they navigate adulthood and the enduring consequences of their past.

Premiere Date and Episode Count

HBO has officially announced that Euphoria Season 3 will debut on April 15, 2026. New episodes will be released weekly, following the established format of the previous seasons. Much to the delight of fans, the third season will feature a total of eight episodes, maintaining the show’s typical narrative arc and pacing.

A Glimpse into Season 3’s Narrative

While a full trailer packed with plot details is yet to be released, early indications suggest that Season 3 will not shy away from the intense and often shocking storylines that have become synonymous with Euphoria. Early reports hint at Rue, portrayed by Zendaya, finding herself in precarious situations involving drug dealers. Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie, is rumoured to be exploring a life as a cam girl, even while married to Nate, played by Jacob Elordi. Meanwhile, Hunter Schafer’s Jules is reportedly embarking on a path as a sugar baby.

The official logline for the season teases a thematic exploration of profound existential questions: “A group of childhood friends wrestle with the virtue of faith, the possibility of redemption, and the problem of evil.”

Jacob Elordi, speaking in a Variety Actors on Actors interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, expressed a degree of uncertainty about the direction of the new season, stating he wasn’t sure if it would be “a completely different thing.” He candidly admitted, “Whether it works or not, I don’t know. There’s a chance that what I’ve done is not good.” This introspection from one of the show’s leads suggests a bold and potentially experimental approach to the upcoming season.

The Time Jump: A New Era for the Characters

A significant element of Euphoria Season 3 is its temporal setting. The new season will pick up five years after the conclusion of Season 2. Show creator Sam Levinson explained the rationale behind this substantial time jump, stating, “The one thing we all agreed on is we can’t go back to high school – although many, many shows have had 30-year-old high school students, we’re not.”

Levinson elaborated on the choice, “Five years felt like a natural place [to jump] because if they had gone to college they’d be out of college at that time.” This jump allows the characters to move beyond their high school years and confront the realities of young adulthood, facing new challenges and opportunities that come with being in their early twenties.

Production Underway

Filming for Euphoria Season 3 officially commenced in February 2025. Francesca Orsi, HBO Executive Vice President of Programming, expressed her enthusiasm in a statement: “I am thrilled that we are ready to begin production on Euphoria in January. We could not be happier with our creative partnership with Sam [Levinson] and this incredible cast. We are looking forward to bringing this new season of Euphoria to life for the fans.” This confirmation signals a significant step forward in bringing the highly anticipated season to audiences.

Cast Updates: Who’s In and Who’s Out?

The core cast of Euphoria is largely returning, but there have been notable departures. Barbie Ferreira, who portrayed Kat Hernandez, announced in April 2023 on the Armchair Expert podcast that she would not be returning for Season 3. She described the decision as a “mutual decision” with director Sam Levinson, explaining that she felt there wasn’t a clear narrative path for Kat.

Ferreira elaborated, “I don’t think there was a place for [Kat] to go, there were places she could have gone, but I just don’t think it would have fit into the show… for me, I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend- really don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want it either.” She further commented on the collaborative struggle to find a continuation for her character, noting, “It was a struggle for both parties – Sam, me – it was a struggle to find the continuation of her so that was actually really hurtful, watching it and seeing the fans get upset.” Ferreira concluded by suggesting that Levinson writes characters he relates to, and she didn’t believe he related to Kat.

The fate of Rue’s storyline remains a significant question mark for fans, especially following the events of Season 2. Sam Levinson shared with ELLE that he envisions Season 3 as a “film noir” narrative, through which Rue will “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”

Tragically, the beloved actor Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, passed away in July 2023. His untimely death means that Fezco’s storyline has concluded. Prior to his passing, co-star Colman Domingo had shared with Teen Vogue that Angus was slated to play a central role in Season 3. Domingo reflected on the impact of Angus’s death on the season’s development, stating, “I’m sure it affected the creation of season three because Angus was going to be a very strong part of it… We came together as a cast many times to grieve, to mourn, to laugh, and enjoy all the things we know about Angus.”

New Faces Joining the Ensemble

While the familiar faces of Euphoria are returning, the show is also expanding its roster with 18 new cast members for Season 3. Among the notable additions are Trisha Paytas, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Deadwyler, and Eli Roth. Other fresh talent joining the series include Sharon Stone, Rosalía, and Marshawn Lynch. Adding to the show’s artistic pedigree, Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer will also be joining the production, likely contributing to the series’ distinct and evocative score.

Episode Count Confirmed

Despite the high demand for an extended season, HBO executive Casey Bloys confirmed to Variety that the number of episodes for Euphoria Season 3 remains unchanged from previous seasons. “I know the show gets a lot of attention now because it has created some genuine movie stars. And they have various projects they are working on, but we are shooting this season, so nothing has changed,” Bloys stated. He ultimately confirmed, “It’s eight episodes.”

Where to Catch Up

For those looking to refresh their memory or dive into the world of Euphoria for the first time, the first two seasons are currently available to stream on HBO Max.
