Peaky Blinders Movie: Creator Reveals Key Character Absences

Peaky Blinders Movie Sparks Fan Frenzy Over Character Departures

The much-anticipated Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man has landed in cinemas and is now available on Netflix, bringing Cillian Murphy back as the iconic Tommy Shelby. The film also boasts a new addition to the cast, Irish actor Barry Keoghan. Fans have been treated to the return of familiar faces, including Stephen Graham as Hayden Stagg, Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, and Packy Lee as Johnny Doggs.

However, the excitement has been tempered by a wave of fan concern and confusion regarding the conspicuous absence of several beloved characters. Chief among these are Tommy’s ex-wife, Lizzie, and the formidable Alfie Solomon, portrayed by Tom Hardy. The most significant stir, however, has been caused by the apparent disappearance of Finn Shelby.

A line spoken by Tommy in the film, suggesting that “all his brothers are dead,” sent fans into a tailspin, fearing the worst for the youngest Shelby sibling. Addressing the outcry, show creator Steven Knight has clarified the situation, assuring fans that Finn is, in fact, alive. Knight explained that the creative decision to focus the film’s narrative on Tommy and his son, Duke (played by Keoghan), necessitated certain omissions.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Knight elaborated on the challenges of bringing back established characters. “If you bring a character like Lizzie back, you’ve got to spend time with them,” he stated. “You can’t just gloss over.”

The reasoning behind Finn’s absence is more straightforward: his storyline has taken him to Liverpool, while the events of The Immortal Man are firmly set in Birmingham. While his presence in the upcoming sequel series is yet to be confirmed, it’s possible the character might be recast if he does make an appearance. This potential recasting stems from the original actor, Harry Kirton, who played Finn, expressing his disinterest in the film. Kirton had previously told Heatwold during the sixth season that he wasn’t keen on being involved in a film that depicted his character in his mid to late twenties.

Later, Kirton further clarified his stance to Metro, explaining that he wished to avoid being “pigeonholed” and was keen to explore other career opportunities.

What’s Next for the Peaky Blinders Universe?

The world of Peaky Blinders is far from over. Last year, Steven Knight confirmed that audiences can look forward to two further Peaky Blinders sequels. These new series are slated to be set in Birmingham, in the year 1953.

Each of these new series will consist of six 60-minute episodes. They are set to be streamed on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the UK, with a worldwide release planned for Netflix. Steven Knight will reprise his role as writer and creator for these upcoming projects. He will also be involved in executive producing duties, alongside Cillian Murphy, Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Jamie Glazebrook, Jo McClellan, and Danielle Scott Haughton.

The Peaky Blinders franchise has consistently captivated audiences with its gritty narrative and compelling characters. While The Immortal Man has introduced new plot points and character dynamics, the creator’s commitment to the established universe, coupled with the promise of further instalments, suggests that the Shelby saga will continue to unfold for some time to come. The strategic omissions in the film, though initially concerning for fans, appear to be part of a larger plan to meticulously develop the ongoing storylines and explore new narrative avenues within the expansive Peaky Blinders universe. The future of Finn Shelby, and indeed other characters, remains a topic of keen interest for the dedicated fanbase.
