Graduate Fatally Shot in San Francisco; Security Specialist Arrested

A tragic incident has shaken San Francisco, with a 22-year-old university graduate losing her life after being shot at a property in the city’s Sunset District. Police have apprehended Nation Wood, a 25-year-old security specialist, in connection with the fatal shooting that occurred on March 24. The victim has since been identified as Samantha Emge, a student slated to graduate from San Francisco State University in 2025.

Responding officers from the San Francisco Police Department were dispatched to the residence at approximately 10:43 pm. Upon arrival, they discovered Emge with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention from paramedics and urgent transport to a local hospital, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.

Sources close to Emge have indicated to local media that Wood was her boyfriend. Police confirmed that Wood was detained at the scene when officers arrived and was subsequently arrested the following morning. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail.

Initial reports from local officials suggest that the shooting may not have been an intentional act. Supervisor Alan Wong, who represents the district where the incident took place, stated that early information points towards an accidental nature of the event.

A Glimpse into the Lives of Those Involved

Social media profiles offer a poignant glimpse into the lives of Wood and Emge. An Instagram post shared on Emge’s account features a smiling photograph of the couple, both sporting baseball caps. Emge captioned the image, reflecting on their shared experiences and personal growth: “Travelled, ate, built a table, and became a real adult in 2025.”

Michael Wood, Nation Wood’s father, has expressed his devastation over the incident, stating that he has no comment on “this horrible, horrific tragedy.”

Nation Wood’s professional background, as detailed on his LinkedIn page, reveals a role as advance staff at the White House from November 2023 until July 2025. A photograph posted on his profile shows him with former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, in 2024. He noted his gratitude for the opportunity to assist the Vice President with her trip to APEC in San Francisco. Wood’s academic pursuits included a major in political science and government at SFSU, from which he graduated in May 2024. He described his work as an independent pre-event site security adviser.

Academic and Athletic Pursuits

Before his time at San Francisco State University, Wood attended Saddleback College. There, he earned an associate’s degree in liberal arts and sciences/liberal studies. During his tenure at Saddleback, he was an active member of the college’s baseball team, the Saddleback Bobcats. Following his collegiate career, he played for the Walla Walla Sweets, an amateur baseball team based in Washington. Wood’s high school athletic achievements were notable, including two all-state selections and three all-conference selections, culminating in him winning the conference MVP award in 2019.

Samantha Emge’s academic path at San Francisco State University focused on interior design and architecture, with her studies spanning from August 2021 to May 2025. Upon graduation, she was set to begin a role as a design assistant at Chantal Lamberto Interior Design.

In response to the tragedy, San Francisco State University has extended its deepest sympathies. A spokesperson for the university, Dave Knutson, conveyed condolences to Emge’s family and friends, acknowledging the profound grief experienced by all who knew her.

The Independent has reached out to the White House, the SFPD, and SFSU for further comment on this developing story.
