The Australian television landscape is in mourning following the tragic passing of Mel Schilling, a beloved expert from the reality dating show Married at First Sight. Schilling, aged 54, died after a courageous battle with cancer, her husband Gareth Brisbane announced on Tuesday evening.
Brisbane shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing Schilling’s final moments were filled with love and concern for their family. “In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,” he wrote in an Instagram post. He elaborated that this selfless act, using her last vestiges of strength, perfectly encapsulated Schilling’s character, with her thoughts always on her loved ones.
A Public Figure and a Private Battle
Mel Schilling first received her colon cancer diagnosis in December 2023. She bravely shared her terminal diagnosis publicly in March, revealing that the cancer had metastasised to the left side of her brain. At the time of her announcement, her oncology team had informed her that “there’s nothing further they can do.”

Despite the grim prognosis, Schilling’s husband spoke of her incredible resilience and unwavering spirit throughout her illness. He highlighted her strength, noting that she became a new mother and a television star at the age of 42. “This is a woman who, through two years of chemotherapy, when she could barely lift her head from the pillow, never complained and never stopped showing courage, grace, compassion and empathy, and never missed a day of filming,” Brisbane stated.
From MAFS Matriarch to Beloved Mum
To the Australian public, Mel Schilling was best known as the no-nonsense, insightful expert on Married at First Sight, a queen of the reality TV genre. However, to her husband and daughter Maddie, she was simply “our wee Melsie” – an “incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
In February, Schilling had announced her decision to step back from Married at First Sight after a decade on the show. This move was to allow her to focus on her family and her health, as her condition had begun to deteriorate significantly over the Christmas period. She had been experiencing severe symptoms, including “blinding headaches and numbness” down one side of her body.
In her March statement, Schilling had expressed her uncertainty about her remaining time but vowed to “fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.”
A Legacy of Love and Living Fully
Gareth Brisbane shared a poignant message in honour of his late wife, encouraging others to embrace her philosophy on life. He urged people to “Live life to the full, love your people well, and try not to sweat the small stuff.” He concluded by expressing his profound gratitude for their time together, stating, “I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate, and it was the privilege of my life to be by her side. For that, I will be forever thankful.”
Mel Schilling’s impact extended far beyond the television screen, touching the lives of countless viewers with her wisdom and empathy. Her passing leaves a significant void in the Australian entertainment industry and, more importantly, within the hearts of her family and friends.
