Banderas: Heart Attack Changed My Life View

Antonio Banderas: A Heart Attack That Led to a Happier, More Authentic Life

Antonio Banderas, the charismatic Spanish actor who once commanded Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, is reflecting on a pivotal moment that fundamentally reshaped his life. In a candid interview with The Times, the 65-year-old star revealed how a near-fatal heart attack in 2017 served as a profound wake-up call, ultimately leading him to a more fulfilling and contented existence.

“Seriously. Mine was a really serious warning. It changed the way I look at life,” Banderas explained, detailing the profound impact of the health scare.

The incident prompted a dramatic re-evaluation of his priorities and lifestyle. Banderas, who had amassed a legendary career in Hollywood, meticulously dismantled the life he had built in the US. He made the significant decision to quit smoking, divested himself of his sprawling Surrey mansion, sold his American residence, and even parted ways with his private jet.

In stark contrast to his previous globetrotting, jet-setting persona, Banderas has embraced a more grounded existence, returning to his roots in Málaga, Spain. He now resides there with his partner, Nicole Kimpel, 43, living a significantly more pared-back life.

“Faced with death, it made me look back and realise that I am, in fact, a theatre actor,” he shared. This revelation was a powerful pull away from the lucrative, yet perhaps less artistically satisfying, blockbuster machine that had contributed to a staggering box office haul of $77 billion.

A Return to the Stage: The Birth of Teatro del Soho

Instead of chasing Hollywood’s next big hit, Banderas has channelled his passion and resources into Teatro del Soho, a not-for-profit theatre he personally champions. Each year, he contributes approximately €200,000 to its upkeep and development.

“The opportunity arose to buy this venue, a former cinema, which was in a state of disrepair and full of asbestos. It was awful. So I cleared it out and built it inside its shell,” he recounted. This endeavour has allowed him to reconnect with his artistic origins and his community.

“It keeps me in touch with my roots, my neighbourhood, my people. I haven’t lost that connection over the years. Quite the opposite.” The actor even shared a charming anecdote about his local standing, revealing that residents have affectionately nicknamed him “José Hollywood.”

The Health Scare: A Catalyst for Change

The dramatic shift in Banderas’s life can be traced back to that fateful day in 2017. Then 58, he was exercising when he experienced severe chest pains, which were later diagnosed as a heart attack. The medical emergency served as a stark reminder of his mortality and, unexpectedly, a catalyst for profound personal growth. Looking back, Banderas now views the experience not as a tragedy, but as a crucial turning point that ultimately led him to a more authentic and happier existence.

His dedication to his theatre is so profound that he even jokes about his post-mortem plans: “I will come back as a ghost. To haunt my theatre.”

Overcoming Hollywood’s Hurdles

Banderas’s journey in Hollywood was not without its challenges. He candidly admitted that his initial years in the US were difficult, particularly due to the language barrier. “I didn’t speak English, but little by little I made a career for myself there. I later married an American woman and my life changed, my insecurities disappeared.”

Despite early warnings that he might be typecast as a villain, Banderas defied expectations, carving out a successful and diverse career. He recalled the initial prejudice he faced: “They said, you are here, like the blacks and the Hispanics, to play the bad guys.” However, he noted the irony of his roles, quipping, “The problem was a few years later I had a mask, hat, sword and cape and the bad guy was Captain Love, who was blond and had blue eyes.”

His most impactful roles, he believes, have been those that challenged stereotypes and resonated with a younger audience. “Even more important is Puss in Boots, because it’s for young kids. They see a cat that has a Spanish, even an Andalusian accent and he’s a good guy.”

Personal Triumphs: Family and Fatherhood

Beyond his professional achievements, Banderas has also experienced immense joy in his personal life. Last year, he had the profound pleasure of witnessing his daughter, Stella, 29, whom he shares with ex-wife Melanie Griffith, marry her longtime partner Alex Gruszynski in Spain. This union also saw Banderas embrace the role of stepfather to Dakota Johnson, with whom he has maintained a close relationship.

Stella’s wedding, held at a picturesque monastery-turned-winery in Valladolid, was an exceptionally moving occasion for Banderas. “Seeing my daughter dressed as a bride will be one of the most beautiful moments of my life,” he expressed. “I get to be the father of the bride, and it’s a role I take on with all the emotion in the world.”
