Tragedy Strikes British Columbia: Multiple Fatalities in School Shooting
A devastating mass shooting in the small British Columbia community of Tumbler Ridge has left at least nine people dead, including the suspected gunman, and dozens more injured. Canadian police confirmed the grim toll following a series of shootings that unfolded across multiple locations in the town on Tuesday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) released details of the horrific events, stating that six individuals were discovered deceased inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Another victim succumbed to their injuries while en route to hospital. Tragically, two more people were found dead at a private residence within the community.
The suspected shooter was located deceased within the school premises, having sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury, according to authorities. At this time, the identities of both the shooter and the victims remain undisclosed, and a clear motive for the violence has not yet been established.
The initial alert regarding an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge school was received by police at approximately 1:20 p.m. Mountain Time on Tuesday. The situation was declared over by 5:45 p.m. as law enforcement confirmed there were no further suspects or ongoing threats to public safety.
Beyond the fatalities, the shooting left a significant number of injured individuals. Two victims were airlifted to hospital with severe, life-threatening injuries. Approximately 25 other individuals were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The remaining students and staff present at the school were safely evacuated.
Authorities have been conducting searches of other homes and properties in the vicinity, seeking any further victims or individuals who may be connected to the day’s tragic events.
Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander for the RCMP, acknowledged the swift and dynamic nature of the unfolding situation. He highlighted the critical role played by the school, first responders, and the wider community in facilitating a coordinated response.
“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident,” Superintendent Floyd stated. “This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation.”
In response to the tragedy, the local school district announced that both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Elementary schools would remain closed for the remainder of the week.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his profound devastation at the news, extending his heartfelt prayers and deepest condolences to the families and friends who have lost loved ones. He joined Canadians in mourning the irreversible impact on lives and expressed gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who put their lives on the line.

Bob Zimmer, the Member of Parliament for Tumbler Ridge, also shared his condolences, offering his thoughts and prayers for those still receiving medical care in hospital and for the families who have suffered such profound loss.
